Highball 0.10.25 (beta)

pre-release3 hours ago

Forza Horizon 6's native Apple silicon engine gets about 20% less GPU work per frame.

On a base M4 at 1080p, Very Low, FSR Quality, the game's benchmark goes from 36 to 43 frames a second without a cap. With the 30 cap Highball sets, the frame rate stays at 30 but holds it more easily, and a 3.5 minute drive showed no hitch over 150 ms. That is one drive on one Mac, so please tell us how it runs on yours.

If you already use this engine, Play offers the new revision, r3, once. The game prepares its shaders again on the first start, which takes a few minutes. A new driver build can't reuse the old ones.

Two changes in KosmicKrisp make the difference. It flushes the GPU's caches less often, and for this game it no longer checks the size of a constant buffer on every read. If you see wrong graphics or a crash on this engine that you didn't see before, please report it.

The same engine no longer crashes when you play with a controller, which happened driving in or out of downtown Tokyo (#618). Thanks to ineshd, who found the cause in FEX and sent the fix.

Also in this version:

  • Deleting an environment can keep its saves, with Keep saves as the default. Thanks to gabeperez (#612).
  • A household sharing one Mac can see which Steam account installed a game, and filter the library by account. Thanks to gabeperez (#591).
  • Windows components show Installing until every step has run. Thanks to gabeperez (#590).
  • Uninstalling a GOG game can keep its saves first, including what the game wrote in its own folder, and puts them back on the next install. Thanks to gabeperez (#589).
  • Visual C++ runtimes install in an environment set to Windows 7 too (#626).
  • Epic games sync their cloud saves, with a copy kept before anything is replaced, and uninstalling can keep the saves. Thanks to gabeperez (#611).
  • Highball finds a second Steam library even when the steamapps folder itself can't be read (#603).
  • Report a Problem keeps the end of a long log, where a crash shows, and the command line's engine accept says plainly when an engine isn't installed (#615).
  • GOG games installed in a Games folder that links to an external drive turn to Play (#600, thanks udance4ever).
