Highball 0.10.11 (beta)

latest release: v0.10.12
pre-release5 hours ago

Steam's own window works in an environment set to D3DMetal. Steam's browser cannot draw under D3DMetal, so after switching an environment for a DirectX 12 game such as Forza Horizon 6, Steam came up black and you could not sign in or install anything (highball#268). Highball now opens Steam's window with DXMT there. Play is unchanged: the game still starts on D3DMetal.

"New environment" for a Steam game now installs Steam in the new environment before the game's fix, so the game can be installed there. It used to leave Steam out, and the install step then failed with a message about an older Highball. Pressing Install in any environment without Steam now installs Steam first.

Retina mode no longer makes Windows programs see twice the screen size. The fix is in all four engine lines: the default engine moves to r22, a 160 KB update, plus the D3DMetal 4 line r23 and the Wine 11 engines r20 and r21. Only environments with Retina mode on see a difference. This is the likely cause of Red Dead Redemption 2's cropped 1080p (highball#261). Thanks to @athei for the Wine change (fa43d6db2), and for the refreshed patch 0012 in r20 and r21.

A new Forza Horizon 6 setup now gets the Wine 11 engine r20, which is r18 with the Retina fix. An environment already on r18 keeps it, and both work. Checked on a base M4: it starts on r20, keeps the Xbox sign-in and reaches the garage at about 45 fps.

Paperback: The Game reaches its title menu on the Wine 11 engines r20 and r21, through a new OpenGL patch (highball-db#349).

Also in this version:

  • Each Steam game can have its own launch arguments, on its page (highball#236).
  • A game's page can change its environment's engine (highball#262).
  • Disc images (.iso) open: Highball mounts them read-only and lets you pick the program to run (highball#184).
  • "Emulate display mode changes" now covers old low resolutions the Mac does not list, such as 640x480 in Warhammer: Dark Omen, and the setting stays on.
  • The core fonts install without Xcode's tools.
  • Report a Problem attaches the game's log, not Highball's own housekeeping.
  • The Installed filter hides programs whose files are gone, such as games on an unplugged drive (highball#269).
  • Stopping an environment only ends its own programs, even when a game folder is linked from another environment (highball#270).

The database gained Star Wars: Empire at War, Where Safety Ends, Paperback, Company of Heroes 3 and Farthest Frontier, with fixes for Portal 2's video memory, Dune: Spice Wars and The Sims Legacy Collection. Planet Coaster 2's recipe no longer turns on Metal's validation layer, which froze two Macs. Thanks to everyone who sent reports.
