If you're on 2.2+, your phone will offer this update on its own. And starting with this release, it can install itself too — not just push the update to the watch.
Updates, reimagined
- Update the phone from inside the app: a new "Update phone" button downloads the phone APK and opens the installer directly — no more hunting for the file in the browser. (Needs the one-time "install unknown apps" permission, same as any sideloaded app.)
- Redesigned Updates screen: a status band tells you at a glance whether you're up to date, the phone and watch versions sit on their own card, and the release notes ("What's new") show right there — rendered as formatted text instead of raw Markdown.
- Update-available icon in the toolbar: a green icon shows up next to Help whenever a checked release is newer than what's installed, and opens the Updates screen when tapped — so a dismissed or missed notification isn't the only way to notice.
- "Check for updates now" moved to the top of Settings, instead of being buried near the bottom.
New watch styles
- Expressive pill (seek & volume): a colorful tonal pill in the album accent color with dark text of the same hue on top — the system media player's tonal-pair look — shared by the scrub-time and volume-percentage readouts.
- Groove (volume): a recessed dark channel with a slim bright accent core.
Fixes
- "Update phone" failing with "There was a problem parsing the package": the downloaded APK could come back truncated — a known Android networking quirk with the kind of redirect GitHub release-asset links go through. Downloads are now verified against the expected size before installing; a bad download is discarded and reported so the button can just be tapped again.
- Watch crash on Wear OS 5 (e.g. Xiaomi Watch 2): refreshing the media Tile/complication could crash the app — the tiles library reads a system setting the platform now blocks for apps targeting API 35. That refresh is best-effort again and can no longer bring the app down.
- Finger scrolling in the watch menu with "Always select center action" on: that mode covered the whole list with an invisible tap target, so only the rotary crown could scroll. Tapping now confirms the centered row without blocking scroll.
- Config backups restore across Android versions: exported config files are now stored in a version-independent format and rebuilt on the importing device, instead of raw bytes that could fail to decode on a different Android version. Existing backups still import.
- Less crash-report noise: expected, already-handled situations no longer get logged as crashes.
Installing
On 2.2+: just accept the update notification (Settings → Updates → Check for updates now works too), then hit Update phone and Update watch. Older versions: sideload mobile-release.apk and wear-release.apk manually one last time.
