Performance and DynOS update
This release focuses on smoother gameplay in actor-heavy areas such as Bob-omb Battlefield while preserving enemy behavior and gameplay.
What changed
- Reduced general actor CPU cost by removing unnecessary square roots from the shared nearest-player search used by Bob-ombs, Goombas, Chain Chomp, bosses, flames, and many mod actors.
- Removed additional repeated distance work from Bob-omb Buddy steering.
- Added a Quest startup shader warmup using 29 shader combinations learned from successful gameplay, including level-dialog rendering.
- New shader combinations encountered in the base game or DynOS packs are saved to the shader cache and precompiled on later launches.
- Floating VR hands now use matching hand display lists from active DynOS character packs when available, carrying the pack's own hand geometry, textures, lighting, and colors. Packs without compatible hand lists safely use the standard gloves.
- Enemy targeting, chase thresholds, collisions, damage, interactions, and multiplayer selection behavior are unchanged.
Install or update
Download the APK below and install it through SideQuest. Install it over your existing copy—do not uninstall first—so your imported ROM, saves, and settings remain intact.
The APK does not include a ROM or Nintendo assets. You must provide your own legally obtained, unmodified Super Mario 64 US .z64 ROM.
Mods and DynOS packs
Launch the game once and grant the requested file access. The standalone build automatically creates and scans:
/sdcard/SM64VR/mods/
/sdcard/SM64VR/dynos/packs/
Copy extracted DynOS pack folders into the second path, restart the game, and enable them from the DynOS menu. Copy the extracted folder—not the downloaded ZIP—and avoid duplicate folder nesting. The full installation and troubleshooting instructions remain in the repository README.
Tested primarily on Meta Quest 3. Quest 2 remains untested.
