Dimble 0.3.4

Your Live Activities show again. macOS takes them off the menu bar while Dimble hides your icons. Now, while one runs, its pill sits next to the « and a click opens its card, the way it would without Dimble (#106, thanks @supryan). It's on by default.

Dimble has an accent color. Six to pick from in Settings › General, or your own with a color wheel, a hex field or the eyedropper (#123, thanks @noahweidig).

Six betas went into this one. There's also the Clock app's timer in the Timer item, more reasons for Battery and Wi-Fi to come back, a Wide Chevron icon, and fixes for Mission Control, the panel and hover after an update.

New:

  • Live Activities show while Dimble hides your icons. The Shortcuts run indicator is one of them (#107, thanks @artemc). While one runs, the system icons Dimble hides come back too, and they hide again when it ends. It needs Screen Recording, without it the pill stays hidden. Settings › Menu Bar › "Show Live Activities" turns it off.
  • A Live Activities item, in Settings › Menu Bar, for when the real pills can't show. It's there only while an activity runs, and a click brings them back. You'll see it without Screen Recording or with "Show Live Activities" off.
  • Dimble has an accent color now, in Settings › General (#123, thanks @noahweidig). Pick one of six colors, or choose your own with a color wheel, a hex field or the eyedropper. It changes right away with no relaunch, and purple stays the default.
  • If you use the Timer item, it now shows the Clock app's timer while Dimble hides your icons, whether you started it in Clock or with Siri. It counts down, pauses and rings, and it's gone as soon as you cancel or dismiss it. Pick "While a timer runs" on the Timer row in Settings › Menu Bar to keep it off the bar until one starts.
  • Wi-Fi can come back while your Mac is on a hotspot, so you can see when it's still on your phone after you get home (#121, thanks @brijazz). Pick "When it drops or on a hotspot" on its row in Settings › Menu Bar.
  • Battery can come back while it's charging, or below 30% or 40% (#126, thanks @querevs). There's also "While charging or below 20%", for both at once.
  • A Wide Chevron icon in Settings › General › Icon, right after the Chevron (#101, thanks @jmstacey). It's the chevron from the README animation, for anyone who finds the system one too narrow.

Changed:

  • The Focus and Time Machine items get the same choice as the Timer. Pick "While a Focus is on" or "While backing up" on their row in Settings › Menu Bar to keep them off the bar until a Focus starts or a backup runs.
  • A function key can be a shortcut on its own, like F8 for Notification Center (#103, thanks @TigerCat-hu). Before, the recorder beeped unless you held ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃. A key macOS still uses is refused as before.
  • Settings › About › "Report an issue" opens the bug form with your versions and display setup filled in. It also shows dimble.log in Finder, so you can drag it in.
  • Without Screen Recording, the Animation styles and "Show Live Activities" show they're off and say why, with a link to turn it on. Before, they looked like they worked.

Fixed:

  • Mission Control no longer shows a dark box at the top of the screen, flashes your hidden icons as it opens, or leaves the Desktop names over your menu bar when you switch Spaces (#108, thanks @garanda21). The box was the picture Dimble keeps over a menu bar so its icons still look hidden, for example while your other display shows all its icons. With lots of Desktops, their names don't get cut off at your hidden icons anymore either.
  • Hover works again when Dimble starts before macOS has confirmed its Accessibility access, like right after an update or when you first set it up (#116, thanks @brijazz). Hover only worked while Dimble was the active app, and it didn't come back until you quit and reopened it. Now it comes back as soon as the access arrives.
  • Wide items in the row, like a battery with its percentage, keep their menu bar size (#102, thanks @InTheManXG). Every tile used to be the same width, so they were shrunk to fit.
  • The panel no longer jumps on its first open after Dimble starts (#104, thanks @swhitlow). Dimble now keeps its pictures of your icons between launches and gets their order right from the start.
  • A window taking focus while the panel took its icon pictures left a line under the tiles in row view and pushed icons up inside them (#127, thanks @jaylotw).
  • A tile could show a piece of the front app's menu in place of its icon, when the icon sat under those menus (#127, thanks @jaylotw).
  • Screen Mirroring's blue highlight no longer shows up as a square box on its tile (#125, thanks @qbosen). The icon takes your accent color instead while it's in use.
  • When the clock is hidden, clicking its spot opens Notification Center right away, even while you record your screen (#103, thanks @TigerCat-hu). Once in a while it opened a second late, and your next click closed it.
  • Dimble spots an icon that comes from a small helper app, like ChatGPT Classic's, and offers its launcher in the layout editor (#103, thanks @TigerCat-hu). Before, you had to add it in App launchers yourself.
  • A reveal or a tuck away that cuts off another one no longer stalls the animation (#113, thanks @akshaymaloo).
  • Settings › Menu Bar now names the Dimble items that keep Apple's Now Playing, camera controls, AirDrop, Focus and Timer hidden. It gave the wrong reason if you only had Quick Note, Shortcuts or Fast user switching on.
  • The layout editor's Apply no longer comes back as "Apply (1)" right after you apply, with a "Dimble Items" tile out of place.
  • Dimble should no longer crash about 2 seconds after launch, while it reads the menu bar.
  • The Camera & mic item should drop its SharePlay icon when Control Center restarts during a session.
  • A section's separators and Dimble items should no longer disappear until a relaunch over a long session.
  • The play/pause item should go back to play when nothing answered your click.

Also:

  • Safer updates (#114, #117, thanks @akshaymaloo). Each update's signature is checked before it's published. The release notes window doesn't load anything from the web and only opens https links. And Dimble checks every message it trades with its helper apps.
  • Dimble's log keeps the start of a session instead of filling it with empty space, and it says when Dimble quits, so a report can tell a quit from a crash (#130, thanks @cookie-drummer).
