Pelmet 0.2.22

Two bugs reported within a day of each other, both about Pelmet doing things
nobody asked for. Fixed, plus a smoother reveal for anyone running without
Screen Recording.

Fixed:

  • Pelmet kept opening the Screen Recording pane in System Settings. If you'd
said no to the permission, every reveal after the first prompt sent you
there again. Pelmet now asks once and then leaves it alone. The
Grant button in Settings > General is still there if you change your mind.
Thanks to cookie-drummer for reporting it, with a video.
  • Hidden icons flashed on their own every ten seconds. Proton Drive ships a
helper that relaunches "Proton Drive" every ten seconds, and the second
copy quits the moment it sees the first. Pelmet thought the app behind the
icon was coming back each time and briefly lifted the hide to let the icon in.
Pelmet now checks that the process behind the icon is actually gone before
doing that. Thanks to mynameisluca-02 for the log, it's the whole story.
  • The reveal without Screen Recording was choppy. macOS slid the icons in
from the arrow and Pelmet's own launchers and separators landed on their
own clock. The icons now fade in together where they belong, and Pelmet's launchers
follow a beat later. More on that timing in a coming update.

About the Screen Recording permission, since it came up. Pelmet uses it for
one thing. It takes a picture of the icon strip a moment before a reveal or
a hide, so it can play a smooth animation over the stock macOS motion. The picture
lives in memory for that animation only. Nothing is saved and nothing leaves
your Mac. Keeping it off is fine, you get the macOS motion instead.
