Changelog

To people who don't like change... attention this update brings a slightly new (imo improved) UI, be warned!!!
All new home widgets can be disabled, so technically you can make Jotty look almost identical as it used to be (bar a few changes), I just wanted to add some nice little extra touch.

This version comes with a migration so please make sure to back up your data. I have refactored the attachments, which is now much safer, private and will allow you to sunset the various env variables to show images in public notes. Attachments can only be seen by people who own/have access to the notes now, so hopefully it'll all be good ❤️

I just wanted to also thank everyone who uses and has ever even tried Jotty... We have just reached 1 million docker downloads, which is INSANE to me ❤️ Thank you so much, small comparison video to show how far we've come (the OGs will enjoy this one)

features

  • This version brings huge performance improvements, no matter how many notes you have Jotty should now feel snappy, fast and overall extremely light to use. One of the biggest issue with performance was the sidebar, which is now virtualised, you only see what's on screen at any time (from the moment you have 500+ notes, otherwise they are just there always, as it's barely noticeable up until that point) and the indexer now works in the background spawning processes on changes. If you delete the database files will always be source of truth, which means Jotty still doesn't have databases, technically lol
  • Added live collaboration, you can now work on the same note with other people you shared it with - THANK YOU @DrissiReda
  • Added HA support, you'll now be able to have multiple Jotty instances share the same file system - THANK YOU @DrissiReda
  • Improved upon the MCP, this new version will allow you to assign virtual users to tasks in kanban, this is all accessible and usable via the MCP, an agent coordinator is able to assign tasks to subagents and leverage Jotty to co-ordinate tasks and work on issues. This is extremely cool and I have been trialing it for a little bit. It's what I was wishing hermes did with their Kanban, and my own take on agentic orchestration, I hope you like it and resonate with it. The MCP itself documents this and teaches your llm how to orchestrate the Jotty way, you should give it a task, tell it to leverage Jotty and see the magic happen.
  • Updated the UI to feel slightly more modern and up with times, I don't want Jotty to feel dated, nor boring, I have spent a ton of time designing this (less so implementing it) and I think it looks pretty damn cute. It's not major changes, just some big QOL improvements here and there, especially around modals/dropdowns/panels and so on.
  • The editor has been entirely re-built. It still uses TipTap underneath, however it now doesn't do html to markdown to html round trip as it used to. I found much better ways to achieve the same clipboard retaining without needing to overcomplicating it. This should make the editor overall feeling way less buggy and performant
  • Going in and out of edit mode will retain the same scroll point you were on - Thank you @DrissiReda
  • Default font is now bigger on notes due to how the new editor has been re-styled, I have added a slider in quick settings and user preferences that'll allow you to set your own font size for the editor, that should give you more freedom whilst allowing the new default to be slightly bigger.
  • Add new sharing endpoints for both api and mcp #636
  • Archive/Brain and Template has been moved in the user avatar dropdown instead of the setting page, makes more sense there, frankly
  • Notes can now be templated and re-used over and over #632
  • Frontmatter can be edited from the UI now
  • Tables of content has been changed to "details", and the "details" view covers tables of content, links and tags, this should make the whole note page feel MUCH neater
  • Add checklist item sorting - Thank you @EthanC

bugfixes

  • Note/checklist cards now use excerpts, everything should feel much snappier than it used to be
  • The linking/wikilink and obsidian compatibility was fairly subpar on last release, I should have tested it a bit further trying to cover more edge cases, I think it's pretty much impossible to have a full compatibility, so the trade off I thought about is having a clear UI error when something is just not compatible and let user decide what they want to do with it (with a handy "fix me" button, obviously).
  • Some links were still orphaned on rename, this should be sorted but you may experience an OLD orphaned link still being orphaned in this new version until you manually fix it. From now on all links are based on notes, using the note itself as source of truth and the index db as a quick search
  • Zombie (defunct) processes accumulate because node runs without an init process #627
  • Deleted notes remain in sidebar after an API update #628
  • Task details view was too small in PWA, this also was a good excuse to clean up the tasks modal #638
  • Checklist sub-items don't stay collapsed #625
  • Deleted notes remain in sidebar after an API update #628

API breaking changes

  • Export downloads now need auth.
  • Admin whole-data exports over an API key now get 403.
  • /search with an unknown type now gets 400.
  • /summary for an unknown user now gets 404.
