v0.2.15 — see who is using your internet

DishWatch can now show which devices are on your Starlink router and how much each
one is using. We used to say this wasn't possible. The dish does refuse the request,
but the router answers it with no login.

In the app

There's a new Devices section in the panel, below Observed. It is closed by
default, and names whichever device is busiest. Open it to see:

  • Each device, with its live speed, Wi-Fi band or wired link, and totals. Devices
that have left stay listed and dimmed as away.
  • A share bar comparing download across devices: live when two or more are
    downloading, otherwise by total.
  • Part of the MAC address beside short names, so two devices both called iPhone
can be told apart. The router masks the rest. Most iPhones use a private address
here, so compare it with Settings → Wi-Fi → your network.

The section hides when no Starlink router answers, including in bypass mode. Dish
readings are not affected either way.

What the numbers mean

  • Totals start when you install this version and say "since" that date. The
router's Wi-Fi counters restart when a device reconnects, so DishWatch adds them up
itself. Totals can run a little low: traffic in the last few seconds before a
    device disconnects is lost.
  • Everything behind a second router counts as one wired row. DishWatch can only
count what the Starlink router can see.
  • Wired figures are marked ~ because they are rough. The router's wired totals
come from a counter that read about 25% low on download and well high on upload
when tested on Wi-Fi. Wired speed takes 2 minutes to appear.

Measured on one Starlink Mini. Other models may report less, or nothing.

In the terminal

sl clients lists the same devices with their current counters, without the running
totals. STARLINK_ROUTER overrides the router's address.

Privacy

DishWatch now also talks to your Starlink router at 192.168.1.1, as well as your
dish. Device names and addresses are saved only on your Mac, and a device is forgotten
after 30 days unseen. The Local Network permission text says this too.
