Max Payne 2 VR v0.1.0-rc.66 — Weapon handling, saves and rendering update

  • Loaded weapon racking: cycle the Beretta, Desert Eagle, MP5, AK, Colt Commando, Dragunov and bolt-action sniper while loaded. A complete rearward pull ejects one round; partial pulls do not.
  • Chambered ammunition: applicable magazine-fed weapons retain their chambered round during a magazine change, allowing a full magazine plus one. Fully topped-off ammo counts appear blue.
  • Better weapon handling: improved two-handed alignment and aiming, left-hand grip poses, pistol slide grips, sniper bolt handling and scope visibility. Faster weapon pickups and fixes for dual-wield drops/catches, sawed-off support grips and one-handed shotgun pumping.
  • Save/load fixes: held and holstered guns, grip states and ammunition restore more reliably. VR loadout records now live beside saves, and newly saved held guns no longer create duplicate ground weapons.
  • Body tracking fixes: firing while standing no longer switches Max into the full-body firing stance. Fixed unwanted reload sounds and body-IK interruptions when catching guns in the hospital.
  • Mirror and visibility fixes: corrected disappearing body parts and doorway rendering in mirrors, window/portal pop-in, and angle-dependent jacket-holster visibility. Improved touch interaction with cabinets while keeping bump-open doors working normally.
  • Rendering improvements: removed unnecessary mirror reallocations and routine performance tracing. Desktop window size can follow the launcher independently of the selected VR resolution.
  • Controller/startup fixes: adjusted Quest trigger handling for missed or delayed shots, corrected fresh-install Quest left-hand aiming, and improved SteamVR startup with non-ASCII Windows usernames. Includes the earlier Index and installer compatibility fixes.
  • Quick save and load: hold Square / Quest X / Index left A for one second to quicksave while alive or quickload while dead. Double-tap to open or close the game menu. Larger floating save/death messages use the game's font.
  • More VR options: hide wrist HUDs, hide ammo counters, or disable the melee whoosh. Added resolution presets through 3456 × 3456 per eye.
  • Inventory refinements: smaller chest painkiller zone, positioned closer to the body, with a fix for grabbing while looking down. Shoulder long-gun storage is enabled for new installs; stored shoulder weapons are invisible. Scope aim lock remains off by default. Existing preferences are preserved when updating.

Set VR resolution before launching

After installing, open maxpayne2vr_settings.ini beside the game's maxpayne2.exe. Under the existing [VR] section, add or change:

RenderResolution=1800

This renders 1800 × 1800 per eye. Supported values: 1440, 1800, 2160, 2400, 2560, 2880, 3200, 3456. Set 0 to use the launcher's resolution. Save before launching; changing resolution requires restarting the game.

Install or update

Download max-payne-2-vr-v0.1.0-rc.66.zip below and extract it into a new folder. Close the game, run Max Payne 2 VR Setup.exe, select your game, and choose Install / update. Keep setup-files beside Setup. Existing saves and settings are preserved.

Old saves without matching VR loadout records cannot recover their original physical gun arrangement. Existing duplicate guns already written into an older save are not removed automatically.

Requires your own supported copy of Max Payne 2 and SteamVR. The download contains mod software and licensed dependencies; Setup generates game-derived assets locally. No game assets are bundled. Bullet-wound/blood-stain experiments are not included.
