Etterna 0.70.0 - Public Calc Test

latest releases: v0.72.3, v0.72.2, v0.72.1...
pre-release3 years ago

read this or ur dum: this build may not be stable

there has been tons of code maintenance and internal restructuring (read: almost every file in the codebase has been altered in some way), there will almost certainly be bugs and we're talking wipe your profile and preferences and upload embarrassing photos of you kind of bugs, you are warned; we will accept no liability if your shit completely breaks and you made no backups

take a look at all the beautiful commits here

and for the last time if something breaks and you lose all your scores it isnt anyone elses fault but your own

MacOS Note

This MacOS binary is not signed, so before it can be installed it must be de-quarantined by executing this command in the same directory as Etterna-0.70.0-Darwin.dmg:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine ./Etterna-0.70.0-Darwin.dmg

Additionally, OpenSSL and libssh2 are required. They can be installed with Homebrew:

NOTE: If you don't have Homebrew installed already, follow the instructions from the Homebrew website.

brew install openssl libssh2

new calc

  • it's new, there's actually too many changes to list, treat it like it's an entirely new entity because it basically is.
  • you can look at what it's doing, right click chart preview button to see the calc debug output
  • you can change parts of what it's doing with the calc params. you have to open the calc debug stuff to generate it for the first time because i'm bad at progrimming
    • calc params can be found in the save folder
    • dont mess with this if you dont know what you are doing but thats not going to stop you is it
  • jackspeed was slapped together at the last moment and is the least refined (as usual). but it should be actual jacks files for the most part and not just stupid minijack abuse
  • the other stuff is ok and if you lose a lot of rating it's because you are bad, not the calc. for reference my profile goes down about 0.25
    • hey this is other person writing and my profile went up 1.00 haha get owned everyone
  • i mostly care about feedback on things that are severely underrated without any obvious indications as to why (some files are just casualties of mash nerfing), anything severely overrated (like 30%+) i want to know about, except vital vitriol i know exactly what the problem with that is (and by extension and important concept that i'm currently ignoring), i just didn't want to bother delaying this for another week trying to deal with it since it's already been delayed by like, a month
  • i also care about things the calc is doing that are obviously wrong and bugged, this does not include some stuff being marked handstream/js/chordjack or whatever even when it has none of those values, what that means is the stream rating has been so depressed by mash downscalers that it dips below the minimum skillset modifier for the first 3, i care about stuff like, files having extremely high rating in places where there are no notes, and for seemingly no reason. (the calc debug output is not aligned with the chord density graph for files that have lots of empty space before the first set of notes (aka bad files), so account for that)
  • you can change calc params on disk with the game open and use the recalc scores button in profile to immediately see the changes reflected. also this apparently crashes for some people so w.e deal with it. this will be the only way to see changes other than manually editing the calc version tags in your save file, which again, if you mess it up, that's on you
  • i'm not going to spend my time teaching you how to read graphs if you don't know. seriously, i'm not, don't ask me to
  • new calc is copiously commented and if you ask me broad questions about it i will just tell you to go look at the code, if you ask me specific questions about it i will just tell you to go look at the code, but perhaps with an added "good luck"
  • if you do take the time to play with params and you do end up with something that you are convinced is better than the current tuning, and you are able to convince me as well, i will update the params and you will get some sort of credit or reward in some way.
  • please keep in mind the calc serves a dual purpose, to provide the basis for a leaderboard, and to give players a guide while playing new stuff so they don't get smashed by stuff they never expected, nobody likes that
  • new calc will go live on site shortly(tm) with probably some improvements(tm) and probably minor balance adjustments to start, assuming obvious huge issues aren't revealed with this release (which is the point of it)

misc calc related stuff

  • overall player rating has been slightly altered, it now rewards you for having multiple strong skillsets rather than punishing you for your weakest one

  • the overall rating displayed for a file on music select is now a composite value that is slightly higher if the file detects strongly in multiple areas (functionally it uses the same new system as above, which isn't new, because skillsets have been aggregated this way the entire time). this is a DISPLAY VALUE ONLY, it has no effect on any score ratings or player ratings. it is meant to bandaid over the major weakness of the calc, which is that skillset based passes inevitably under evaluate files with lots of variation. i recognize this may be confusing if you are used to assigning a 1:1 correspondence with overall rating and the highest skillset rating, especially if you are looking at ratings, so keep in mind that you need to check the msd tab if something feels too high because it might not be (at least, functionally)

  • cache will be rebuilt because of new calc and also notedata is now cached, which means your cache is bigger now. the numbers, they do go up

  • there's the detailed changelog too maybe you should read that

random stuff

  • grade sorting was fixed, dunno if it still is (it is)
  • oh man theres so much we did that nobody cares about just go read the detailed changelog if you care about things you dont care about
    • fps might have gone up but it might have gone down
  • linux might compile but i heard it doesnt actually work have fun with that

bug fixes

  • differential reload resetting wheel/downloader page
  • filter errors
  • rare shutdown crashes
  • rare parse crashes
  • you couldnt press ctrl+0
  • SOLO (calc) WAS BROKEN THANKS FOR NOT TELLING US

known issues

  • i put very little effort into release notes
    • me too
  • some of the nerfers might be a little overboard, that is intentional for now, easier to balance up and see what pops
  • something was done last minute that might break literally everything if you have a custom resolution, go find out
  • the rescorer on the profile screen may just close the game instead of doing anything useful, tell us if it does but dont get so mad jeez
  • something is broken thats actually really bad to have broken but we didnt fix it. be the first person to find out what it is
