  • New commandline option --cookies-from-file that accepts a Netscape-style cookies.txt file to specify HTTP cookies to be used the authenticate network requests. This is a complement to the existing --cookies-from-browser support for reading cookies from the cache of a locally installed web browser.

  • Implement support for downloading content from an MPD manifest that is encoded as a data: URL.

  • Improve the handling of wvtt subtitles, that are distributed in fragmented MP4 segments containing embedded WebVTT cues. We now make the subtitles available in WebVTT format, in a file with the same name as the main media container but with a .vtt extension, because they may contain richer style information that is supported by some media players. We also make the subtitles available in SubRip format, as previously. When converting to SubRip format (in a file with the .srt extension), strip out style and speaker information that is not supported in SubRip format.

  • Subtitles retrieved in TTML and VTT formats will be converted to SubRip format and placed into a file with the .srt extension, with the same name as the main media file. This conversion occurs both for subtitles distributed as a “sidecar” (a separate file) and those distributed in fragmented form as a dedicated subtitle media stream (e.g. using the STPP codec).

  • Strip ANSI terminal codes from progress messages and error messages emitted by helper applications that we use for muxing, decrypting or to extract content from media containers.

  • The verbosity of external helper applications (ffmpeg, MP4Box, shaka-packager) is adjusted according to the global verbosity set using the -v commandline option.
