⚠️ Github key migration

The PCAPdroid_v2.0.0.apk file published here is signed with a different key than the previous apks; to install the new apk, you need to uninstall the old app first, as Android won't allow you to update your old app directly, because of the different key. You can still restore your PCAPdroid settings and paid features access, by following the steps below.

This notice is ONLY for people who installed the app from Github; if you installed the app from Google Play or from F-Droid, these steps are NOT for you! Just wait for the new update to be published and installed automatically from your store when it becomes available, which may take some days.

The new signing certificate

The new certificate has the following fingerprints:

Certificate SHA-256: CA:59:62:2B:E5:FE:D9:9A:07:2A:4B:03:E9:A1:AA:05:AC:26:35:4D:3F:FB:1A:2C:72:08:CD:D7:55:46:34:56
Certificate SHA-1: 77:DA:81:21:8F:6E:0D:91:22:07:00:31:7B:2B:CB:90:6F:4D:42:55

To verify the apk signature, you can either run apksigner verify --print-certs PCAPdroid_v2.0.0.apk to print the certificate fingerprints (note: it prints them lowercase and without colons). Alternatively, run tools/verify_apk_signature.sh PCAPdroid_v2.0.0.apk from this repo, which should print GITHUB as the identified signature.

Migrate your settings

To update the Github app without losing your settings:

  1. Download and install PCAPdroid_v1.9.1_migration.apk from below, which is based on PCAPdroid 1.9.1, with the added ability to export the PCAPdroid settings
  2. Open PCAPdroid, click the cog icon in the action bar, then select "Export settings" to save your settings to file
  3. Uninstall PCAPdroid and install the new PCAPdroid_v2.0.0.apk file from below
  4. Open PCAPdroid, click the cog icon in the action bar, then select "Import settings" and select your settings file

After the new apk is installed, the paid features will show up as locked, even if you previously purchased them; this is expected, and it is solved by generating a new license as explained below.

If you have Google Play installed, Google Play may automatically update the v1.9.1 app from Github to the v2.0.0 app from Google Play; if this happens, you don't need PCAPdroid_v1.9.1_migration.apk, just follow the instructions from step 2 above, to export the PCAPdroid settings directly, then uninstall the app and import them back to PCAPdroid_v2.0.0.apk from Github.

Restore your paid features

If you purchased an unlock token to get access to the paid features, you will need to generate a new license after you install the new apk, as the installation ID will be different with the new apk. You don't need to purchase a new unlock token for this; you can now generate 3 licenses with your old unlock token, so that you can migrate all your existing devices to the new app version.

  1. To generate a license, you need your unlock token, which you can recover here from your Google Play order number (see here for more info)
  2. Follow the standard instructions from the PCAPdroid user guide to generate a new license for your device
