Windows x64: download and install

Download WaveRace64Recomp-0.4.0-windows-x64.zip, extract the entire ZIP to a writable folder, and run WaveRace64Recomp.exe. Keep the three DLLs and assets folder beside the executable. Build tools and WSL are not required to play. The companion .sha256 file verifies the archive; debug symbols are an optional separate download.

  • Includes all 1,828 HD texture mappings across 1,806 images, nine replacement recordings, and High/Modern water, enabled on a fresh install. Credits and manifests are bundled. Saved preferences are preserved when upgrading.
  • Native Windows x64 build with Direct3D 12 rendering. Supply your own Wave Race 64 (USA) (Rev A / v1.1) .z64 in the launcher. Required SHA-1: 508dfc2d4caa42b6f6de5263d0aed5e44ac7966a. No ROM, original asset dumps, saves, or personal settings are included.
  • Fixes the Direct3D 12 water pipeline root signature that could cause a crash on the first enhanced-water draw, and corrects CPU/RSP source generation for Windows builds.
  • Keyboard defaults: arrows steer, X accelerates, C is B, Enter is Start, and Escape opens settings. Controller remapping is available in the launcher. Settings and saves live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\WaveRace64Recomp.

Windows validation: an RTX 5090 Direct3D 12 Sunny Beach Time Trial replay with HD textures, Custom music, High water, and Modern appearance completed 1,800 ticks and exited cleanly. All 49 game-state checkpoints through tick 1410 matched the Original-water replay. Captured audio verified game audio and replacement music mixing. All 32 DXIL/SPIR-V water shader compilations, nine bundled-asset tests, four default-setting tests, patch reconstruction, and package integrity checks passed. This is startup/race smoke coverage; all-course playthroughs, Windows Vulkan playback, and other GPU families remain untested here.

macOS: changes since macos.1

  • HD textures included: 1,828 replacement mappings across 1,806 images. This includes refined HUD lettering and numbers, buoy icons, the rank arrow, eight dark-visor character portraits, both Wave Race logos, Dolphin Park signage, ramp wood, island materials, and jet-ski panels for the four riders and their alternate colors.
  • Replacement music included: nine recordings covering all courses, the main theme, options, and first-place results. The Main Theme and Dolphin Park remakes are by Bryan EL; the remaining recordings are from Retro Game Remix's Dolphin Park album. Artist credits and loop metadata are included. Effects and announcer audio remain original.
  • Enabled by default: Graphics → Textures → HD, Graphics → Water → High, Water → Appearance → Modern, and Sound → Music → Custom. High water includes reflections and fine spray. The Water tab also offers Classic appearance, ripple strength, and a spray toggle.
  • Texture integration and filtering fixes: live Original/HD switching, installed-pack overrides, complete world-texture mip chains, and guarded mip selection to avoid unstable texture sampling.
  • Complete app packaging: music, textures, libraries, manifests, and credits are included. No separate texture or music download is needed.

The pack preserves the original designs; rejected generated candidates use source-preserving artwork. Not every material has new generated detail.

macOS: download and install

Download WaveRace64Recomp-0.4.0-macos.2-apple-silicon.zip, extract it, and drag WaveRace64Recomp.app to Applications. The companion .sha256 file verifies the archive.

  • Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer), macOS 15 or later. This build does not support Intel Macs.
  • Homebrew and Xcode are not required to play.
  • Supply your own Wave Race 64 (USA) (Rev A / v1.1) .z64 ROM in the launcher. Other revisions, regions, and Shindou are incompatible. Required SHA-1: 508dfc2d4caa42b6f6de5263d0aed5e44ac7966a.
  • The app is ad-hoc signed and not notarized. If macOS blocks it, attempt to open it, then use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway for this app if you trust the download. Apple's first-launch instructions.

Upgrading: saved settings and saves are preserved in ~/Library/Application Support/WaveRace64Recomp. Existing explicit Original settings stay selected; choose the HD, High/Modern, and Custom options above to enable the enhancements. A user-installed texture pack takes precedence over the bundled pack.

Keyboard defaults: arrows steer, X accelerates, C is B, Enter is Start, and Escape opens settings.

macOS: validation and source

The native Apple Silicon build passed 81 automated tests and bundle integrity checks for all nine recordings and every texture. A fresh-settings native race replay loaded the bundled pack and soundtrack, rendered High/Modern water with 120 Hz presentation requested, and completed 1,551 ticks with a clean exit. The release archive was extracted and checked for matching assets, valid signatures, self-contained libraries, and launcher startup.

Runtime testing was on an M3 Max running macOS 27. The app and libraries target macOS 15, but macOS 15 has not been directly tested here. Requested refresh rates do not guarantee locked 120 FPS on every Mac or course. Full all-course playthrough coverage remains pending, and screen-space reflections depend on visible scene geometry.

The archive includes installation instructions, BUILD.json, asset manifests, and dependency/art credits. It contains the statically recompiled executable and replacement artwork/audio, but no ROM, original asset dumps, saves, or personal settings.
