What's new

  • Panelize a command's output (Command menu → Panelize command output…, or the palette) — run rg -l TODO, git ls-files -m, find . -mtime -1 or dpkg -L nginx, and the files its output names become the panel listing, ready for F3, tagging, F5 and F8. The command has to print paths one per line, so plain ls rather than ls -la; find -print0 and git ls-files -z are understood, so names with newlines in them survive; local directories only, and it runs non-interactively, so shell aliases do not expand.
  • Zstandard archives — .tar.zst and .tzst are read and written like any other tar, so an Arch package (.pkg.tar.zst) opens with Enter and can be created from Compress…. A plain .zst opens as the single file it holds, already decompressed, and is read-only.
  • Debian and RPM packages browse like directories — a .deb shows the files it installs at the root with its control files under /DEBIAN, and an .rpm shows its payload, in both the classic layout and the indexed one rpm 4.14 and later write. Both are read-only, and both are read natively, so mc's extfs scripts, dpkg-deb and rpm are no longer needed to see inside a package.
  • Git stash (Git menu → Stash save… and Stashes…) — save the working tree with an optional message, Include untracked files and Keep the index staged; the stash list shows a stash's diff (Enter), applies it (a), pops it (p) and drops it (d, which asks first, since that discards it for good).
  • Stage a single hunk (in the Alt-D diff) — s stages the hunk under the cursor, x discards it from the working file and u unstages the whole file, so a change worth committing on its own can be split out without leaving the file manager. The patch is the bytes git diff produced handed straight back to git apply, so CRLF files and files with no trailing newline stage as cleanly as any other. The hunks run from the index to the working file, which is not what the two panes show, and the status line says so when something is already staged.
  • Mounted volumes in the drive picker (Alt-F1 left panel, Alt-F2 right panel) — disks and NAS shares under /mnt, and automounted disks and USB sticks under /media, /run/media and /Volumes, now appear as buttons beside Local, read from the system's mount table each time the picker opens.

Changes since last release

  • Commands whose output is captured no longer run in an interactive shell — panelize and the editor's Alt-U paste output of…. An interactive shell calls tcsetpgrp() to take the terminal's foreground process group, which stops Rat Commander dead while it is still drawing; both now run the shell non-interactively and in its own process group. Shell aliases no longer expand in those two places as a result. The command line and the F2 user menu hand the terminal over first, so they are unaffected and keep their interactive shell.
  • The editor caret no longer shows through dialogs drawn over the editor, such as the GeoJSON map.
  • Translations — three interface strings had never reached the catalogs at all and could only ever render in English (the theme editor's Gradient row and its off state, and the viewer outline's (no headings)); those, and every new string in this release, are now translated into the eighteen built-in languages. A new test checks every literal handed to the translation lookup against the English catalog, which the existing completeness check could not see.
