Crisp 1.5.0 adds in-app updates and keyboard shortcuts for presets. It also fixes a Gatekeeper warning that has been on the download all along, plus smooth scaling on single-display Macs, monitor volume, the notch toggle, and True Tone in clamshell.
New
- In-app updates. Crisp checks for a new version once a day in the background and installs it in one click, relaunch included, instead of sending you off to a GitHub release page. Every update is signed and verified before anything is applied, and the check runs quietly so the menu bar app never steals focus. Applies from 1.5.0 and moving forward, meaning that you will have to manually download 1.5.0, but all updates moving forward are automatic (#56)
- Keyboard shortcuts. Any saved preset can carry a global keyboard shortcut, recorded right in the preset form, so switching a whole display setup is one key combo. There's also a new Keyboard Shortcuts section with a Toggle HiDPI action that flips HiDPI on whichever display your pointer is over. It's built on Carbon hotkeys, so none of it needs Accessibility permission. (#61)
Fixed
- The download no longer trips Gatekeeper. Crisp.app has been signed and notarized, but the disk image around it never was, so opening Crisp.dmg could tell you macOS couldn't verify it was free of malware. The DMG is now signed and notarized as well, with the ticket stapled into the file so it checks out even with no network. This was wrong in every release I've shipped, but is now fixed.
- Smooth scaling now applies immediately on single-display Macs. On a Mac mini, or a laptop with the lid closed, toggling it wrote the override but macOS never re-read it, so nothing happened until the next reboot and nothing told you a change was pending. (#54)
- Crisp no longer gates the volume feature on monitors that accepts volume commands but never replies to a read. There's now a per-display Volume Control toggle in the expanded display detail, shown for externals whose probe came back empty. (#57)
- Ultrawide panels get more of their resolution list back. WindowServer refuses scaled backings wider than about 6720px, so on a 5120x1440 display only part of the scaling ladder ever appeared. Smooth scaling read OFF no matter what, and re-enabling it just blinked the screen.
- Hide Notch Area now appears based on the panel's shape instead of a live safe-area read. That read returned zero on a 14" M4 Pro mirroring a virtual display, and on a 16" M1 Pro the toggle only showed up once something else forced a redraw. (#63)
- True Tone no longer vanishes for the whole session when you launch in clamshell. macOS reports it unavailable with the lid closed and Crisp only asked once, at startup. It now re-checks on every refresh, the same way System Settings does.
- The menu panel opens correctly when you click it from a full-screen app's Space. (#53)
- Your resolution and refresh rate come back correctly after Crisp briefly cycles a display to apply a scaling change. On a 165Hz panel over USB-C to DisplayPort it could return at 144Hz, or not restore at all, because Crisp recorded the mode after something had already knocked it down, and the mode it saved stopped matching once the display came back.
Changed
- Menu rows sit tighter, closer to the spacing of a native macOS menu. Current Main Display and Disconnect Display moved to the bottom of a display's section, under its settings rather than in the middle of them, since those two act on the display as a whole.
