PS5 Library 0.7.32

Note

Rest Mode still works only on internal storage; USB support is in progress (unchanged from 0.7.29).

Changes

  • A DNS filter that blocks a catalog server no longer stops the catalog (#17). DNS filters on the console, such as nanoDNS, answer a blocked name with 0.0.0.0 or the console's own address. The library tried to connect there and reported "Could not connect to server", as if the server were down. Now it recognises that answer, asks Cloudflare's DNS over HTTPS (1.1.1.1) for the real address and reads the catalog from there. If that fails too, the message says what happened: "the console's DNS points pegasus-catalog.fly.dev at 0.0.0.0, which blocks it (a DNS filter such as nanoDNS)". The reporter of #17 got the library working only after turning nanoDNS off.
  • The diagnostic report has a DNS line. It says whether nanoDNS settings exist on the console, which servers the console's DNS blocked today, and which were looked up over DNS over HTTPS in the last hour. GitHub and PlayStation servers are named; catalog and file servers are only counted, because catalog addresses stay out of the report.
  • Covers load faster. Each cover the Store asked for made the library read the whole catalog to find that game's artwork, and it checked the title ID with a pattern built anew for each request. With about 3,400 catalog items on a PS5, a cover now takes half as long: 32–47 ms instead of 78–86 ms (median of 60 covers, 6 at a time like the browser).

Validation and limitations

Host build, integration tests, UI checks and the host checks passed. The host checks now cover which addresses count as blocked (0.0.0.0, 127.x, ::, ::1) and which names the DNS answers for (not IP addresses or localhost).

On a PS5 (firmware 13.60) with nanoDNS, which blocks *.playstation.net with 0.0.0.0:

  • Adding a catalog at a name under that domain that doesn't exist anywhere: the library log said "the console's DNS points ps5-library-sinkhole-test.playstation.net at 0.0.0.0, which blocks it (a DNS filter such as nanoDNS); trying DNS-over-HTTPS". DNS over HTTPS then answered that no such name exists, nothing connected to a Sony server, the catalog wasn't saved, and the diagnostic report listed the blocked name.
  • A blocked catalog server that does exist wasn't tried, so reading a real catalog through this path was tested on the host only.
  • Covers: 60 covers from the Store took a median of 32–47 ms on this version against 78–86 ms on 0.7.31, measured on the same console the same night.
  • The six catalogs from #17 still loaded after a restart, and the Store's list answered in 0.5–0.8 seconds. The time went to sending 8 MB over Wi-Fi at about 13 MB/s that night.
  • Updating to this release through Settings → Updates on the same console: the library downloaded and checked 0.7.32 and was running it 12 seconds later. Both copies of the ELF on the console match the release file, the six catalogs (3,454 titles) answered, the Store's list loaded in 0.3 seconds, and the downloads in the queue kept their state.

Load the new ELF; it replaces the running version and keeps your catalogs and settings. A download in progress pauses; Resume continues it.
