Reitti v5.6.0 Release Notes

This release is all about making reitti smarter with the data it gets. The headline feature is a major rework of how the processing pipeline handles sparse location data, and it should make a real difference for everyone running their tracker in battery-saving mode. Let's dive in.

Major Pipeline Update: Better Visits from Sparse Data

Many of you run trackers like OwnTracks in significant move mode to save battery. The tradeoff is well known: your phone only reports a location when something meaningful happens, and then goes quiet for a long time. From reitti's point of view, that silence looks exactly the same as a phone that was switched off. Until now, that often meant visits were missed or detected far too small, even though you clearly spent an hour at that café.

The processing pipeline now has an additional layer that recognizes possible stationary logging from these sparse points and fills in the gaps. Where reitti previously saw scattered dots with a hole in between, it now understands: you were there, you stayed there, and here is how long.

If you rely on significant move mode, your visits should now reflect the real world much more closely, without asking you to change a single setting on your phone.

Workbench: Finer Control

The workbench got a set of small but noticeable improvements:

• The correct time is used when you start working on a range.
• Hovering over the timeline no longer pans the map around so aggressively.
• Point selection is more precise, making it much easier to grab exactly the point you want instead of its neighbor.

Improvements

• Job list reorganized. Jobs are now sorted by state, so running jobs always sit at the top of the list instead of hiding somewhere in between.
• Extra groups for the container. If the reitti user inside the container needs to be part of additional user groups, you can now set them via the new APP_EXTRA_GROUPS environment variable. Details are in the Docker configuration documentation.
• H3 cell updates, 40 times faster. Importing larger files into the spatial coverage index got a 40x speed boost. If you ever re-imported a bigger batch and watched the progress bar, you will feel this one.
• Richer exports for the curious. If you run with DANGEROUS_LIFE enabled, exporting your GPS data can now include the consolidated timeline with all synthetic points. This is mainly helpful for debugging, and it is also the foundation for a feature I am working on: a proper debug mode where you pick a day and reitti generates an anonymized zip to attach to bug reports.

Bug Fixes

• Transport mode overrides now stick to the whole trip. When you manually overrode a transport mode, the change was only applied to a small part of the trip while the rest kept the old value. The override is now correctly applied to the entire segment.

Other Changes

• Fresh translations from Hosted Weblate. A big thank you to all translators!

A little something on the fun side this time: I designed and ordered real reitti stickers, and they have arrived. Seeing the project as something you can actually hold in your hand was a surprisingly good feeling, so I want to share them with you.

The latest docker-compose.yml is available in the GitHub release assets. Pull the new image, restart, done. If you use significant move mode, no configuration changes are needed, the pipeline takes care of the rest.
