Reitti v5.5.0 Release Notes
Hey everyone, Daniel here! 👋
I am really excited to bring you Reitti v5.5.0! This release grew directly out of three common frustrations I kept hearing about (and experiencing myself): visits nobody wants, tracks that look like a plate of tangled spaghetti, and days that end at midnight instead of when you actually go to sleep.
v5.5.0 tackles all three, giving you full control over your timeline, much smoother map tracks, and day boundaries that fit your real-world rhythm.
Key Highlights & What You Can Do With Them
1. Take Your Timeline Back: No-Visit Zones & Visit Cleanup
Automatic visit detection is great, but after months of tracking, noisy spots inevitably creep in. Waiting at your morning bus stop or standing in line at the post office is not a "visit," it is just noise.
- No-Visit Zones: You can now draw custom boundary zones in the Place Editor (like around your local bus stop or train station). Reitti will still track your route straight through the area, but it will never generate unwanted visits there again. Your raw location points stay completely untouched.
- Deleted Visits That Stay Deleted (Without Losing Data): Deleting a visit from the timeline now marks it as suppressed. When your data recalculates, Reitti remembers your choice and will not recreate it. If you ever change your mind, you can restore suppressed visits anytime in the Place Editor with a single click.
- Search in Place Editor: You can now search for places directly by name instead of having to hunt for them across the map.
- Check out the updated Place Editor Documentation for details.
2. Smoother Tracks: The New "Smoothed" View Mode
When you spend an afternoon sitting on a park bench, GPS drift can make your path look like a ball of yarn. Once you start cleaning up stationary visits, all that raw jitter suddenly becomes visible.
- Calm, Realistic Lines: The map now includes a brand-new Smoothed view mode. When you are standing still, it filters out stationary jitter, and when you are on the move, it applies a Kalman filter to keep your path clean and natural.
- Render-Time Only: All smoothing happens directly in your browser during rendering. Your underlying raw coordinates stay 100% intact and preserved in your database.

3. Your Day, Your Rules: Customizable Start of Day
The standard calendar day runs from midnight to midnight, which rarely matches how life works. If you return from a late night out at 2:00 AM, your journey used to get sliced across two different days.
- Custom Day Boundaries: You can now pick when a new day starts in your user settings (for example, setting it to 4:00 AM).
- Unified Stories & Memories: Late-night adventures stay grouped on the evening they actually belong to. Even better, this setting serves as the foundation for your Memories, ensuring your trips are saved as one complete story.
- Special thanks to Terrance for championing this feature in issue #1124! Read more in the User Management Documentation.
4. Automated IRC Notifications & Translation Updates
- Instant IRC Release Alerts: We added an automated workflow so our
#reittichannel on Libera Chat gets notified the moment a new release drops. - Community Translations: A big thank you to our translators on Hosted Weblate for keeping Reitti up to date in multiple languages!
Help Spread the Word!
As always, my focus is purely on developing features, fixing bugs, and improving tracking performance rather than doing social media marketing or self-promotion.
If you enjoy using Reitti, the best way you can help is to mention it to friends or fellow self-hosters on forums, Lemmy, or Reddit who are searching for an open-source, private alternative for location history and tracking!
