github darktable-org/darktable release-5.6.1
release 5.6.1

We're proud to announce the bug-fix release of darktable, 5.6.1!

The github release is here: https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/releases/tag/release-5.6.1.

To build from source, do not use the autogenerated tarball provided by GitHub on the release page, download our tar.xz file instead. If you're just building for yourself without creating a package for some distribution, then using source code cloning in git is an even more convenient way.

The checksums are:

When updating from the stable 5.4 series, please bear in mind that your edits will be preserved during this process, but the new library and configuration will no longer be usable with 5.4.

You are strongly advised to take a backup first.

Important note: to make sure that darktable can keep on supporting the raw file format for your camera, please read this post on how/what raw samples you can contribute to ensure that we have the full raw sample set for your camera under CC0 license!

Since darktable 5.6.0:

  • 150 commits to darktable+rawspeed
  • 100 pull requests handled
  • 8 issues closed

Please note that the darktable documentation is not currently
complete for release 5.6 and contributions are greatly
appreciated. Please see the project
documentation

for more information on how to contribute.

The Big Ones

The following is a summary of the main features added to darktable
5.6.1. Please see the user manual for more details of the individual
changes (where available).

  • N/A

UI/UX Improvements

  • N/A

Performance Improvements

  • Reverted increased preview pipe dimension for UI performance.

Other Changes

  • AI model downloads now resume after an interruption and retry on
transient network errors instead of starting over.

  • AI raw denoise now refuses legacy Fujifilm Super CCD sensors, whose
sensor layout the models were not trained for.

  • Color labels, ratings and manually applied geotags are now copied to
images created by AI denoise and upscale, in addition to EXIF data
    and tags.

Documentation updates

  • The manual has seen a lot of attention this cycle: the documentation
is up to date again, and translations are flowing once more via Weblate.

  • We've also expanded the docs on how dtdocs itself is set up and maintained, making it easier for new contributors to get
    involved
. If you find room for improvement, you are welcome to open an issue, post to pixls.us, or submit a PR yourself.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that left OpenCL AMD devices disabled on Windows
    systems.

  • Fixed a bug in demosaic module resulting from bad green
    equilibration data.

  • Fixed a bug preventing the tether mode to connect when using a non
    English UI.

  • Fixed an out-of-bounds read in wavelet decomposition that could
occasionally crash darktable when generating previews.

  • Fixed an out-of-bounds write in path masks that could lead to
crashes when two nodes overlapped exactly.

  • Fixed a bug in the retouch module that would prevent cache
invalidation after shape changes when blending is active.

  • Fixed an out-of-bounds read in the code responsible for raster
    mask caching.

  • Fixed a possible crash when applying .cube, .3dl, or compressed
    GMIC 3D LUTs.

  • Enforce darktable loading screen on windows systems to avoid
    darkroom refreshing issues.

  • Fixed a bug in CPU opposed highlights code that could lead to out of
    memory crashes.

  • Fixed a crash on Windows when auto-detecting an incompatible ONNX
Runtime library, or when reopening preferences after configuring
    one.

  • Fixed the preferences dialog blocking when opened on a slow or
unreachable network. The AI model update check now runs in the
    background.

  • Fixed a crash in neural restore raw denoise on raws where the
visible area extends to the sensor edge, e.g. some phone
    tele-lens DNGs.

  • Fixed the "add to the current collection" checkbox in neural
restore being ignored when the global "ignore non-raw images"
    import filter is enabled.

  • Fixed neural restore writing past the CFA buffer on 4-Bayer
sensors (CYGM, RGBE). Output is now a Linear DNG.

  • Fixed Sony embedded lens-correction tags being stripped from
exported TIFF and DNG files. Re-imported files now offer the
    "embedded metadata" lens-correction mode again.

  • Fixed a crash and white cast in neural restore preview on
LINEAR-class images (Apple ProRAW, computational raws).

  • Fixed sRaw images being rejected as unsupported by neural
restore. They now route through the LINEAR pipeline.

  • Fixed wrong blue colors for 16bit png exports.

  • Fixed some subtle segment issues in highlights segmentation mode.

  • Fixed two-finger scrolling falling through to zoom when drawing masks,
scrolling now pans unless the active mask consumes the gesture.

  • Fix feather rendering on path masks whose control points coincide
with their corners; previously produced wildly displaced border
lines instead of a proper offset outline.

  • Fixed the on-screen rating message showing the wrong value when
rating multiple images at once (for example, clearing 1-star still
    reported rating 1).

  • Fixed a bug leading to subtle color errors after history changes.

  • Fixed lighttable full preview jumping to the first image when
rejecting with filmstrip auto-scroll disabled and the collection
    filtered to hide rejected images.

  • Fixed the image index and filmstrip selection in culling mode not
updating when navigating with the arrow keys.

  • Fixed lighttable filemanager scrolling to the top when assigning
a star rating or color label while the first row was only partly
    visible.

  • Fixed calculation of pixelpipe cache payloads while preparing the
cache and while checking for requested tiling thus reducing oom kills
    on small systems.

  • Fixed possible over-allocations of OpenCL memory that could lead to
instabilities or dt crashing on small devices

  • Fixed corrupted pixels on some AMD GPUs using the Mesa rusticl OpenCL
driver. Colorspace conversions, the lookup table module and the contrast
equalizer no longer read from and write to the same image buffer on the
GPU, which the OpenCL specification leaves undefined.

  • Fixed the AppImage defaulting to x11/Xwayland in native Wayland
    sessions.

  • Fixed masks being altered by modules blending.

  • Ignore possible OpenCL null events (uninitialized) due to hard
    memory pressure.

  • Fixed performance drop due to larger mipmaps being used. This has
been reviewed to ensure the performance is back to usable on small
    systems.

  • Fixed distortion of one out of every four pixels in JPEG 2000 images
    with YCbCr 4:2:0 subsampling.

  • Fixed a bug where drawn path masks with many nodes rendered a
chaotic feather line instead of following the mask outline.

  • Fixed a crash when switching the lens correction method from
embedded metadata to Lensfun and back.

  • Fixed the AI raw denoise preview showing a different area than the
one selected on cropped images, and the area picker remaining
    unavailable until darktable was restarted.

Notes

  • When exporting to AVIF, EXR, JPEG XL, or XCF, selecting specific
metadata (e.g. geo-tag or creator) is not currently possible. For
AVIF, EXR, JPEG XL, and XCF formats, darktable will not include any
metadata fields unless the user selects all of the checkboxes in the
    export module's preference options.

  • Starting with release 5.4, macOS versions older than 14.0 are no
longer supported on Apple Silicon Macs, nor older than macOS 15 on
    Intel Macs.
