Cairn 126

Cairn 126 adds Cyrillic to the touch screens, fixes the T-Deck's trackball and the L1's battery reading, and brings three new boards to test.

Highlights:

  • Cyrillic in messages and names (#25, #3): Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian letters show as text instead of squares on the T-Deck, L2 Pro, Heltec V4 touch, M9 and T-LoRa Pager, in chats, contact and channel lists and avatar initials. Reading only: there is no Cyrillic keyboard.
  • T-Deck: the trackball follows a slow roll, and stops when the ball stops. Settings › Hardware › Buttons › Trackball sets Fast, Medium or Slow, because balls differ between units.
  • T-Deck: panels that show every colour as its negative: Settings › Display › PANEL › Screen: Inverted.
  • Wio Tracker L1: the battery percent agrees with the app (#36). At 3.42 to 3.53 V the device read 0-1 % and the app 20-30 %.
  • Wio Tracker L1 e-ink: Flip screen (#33), for units moved over from MeshCore that read upside down.
  • New to test, as experimental builds: the LilyGO T5 E-Paper S3 Pro (#22), the LilyGO T-Display K230, and a new SenseCAP MeshPager X2 build.

Checked on a device: the trackball on a second T-Deck, measured. Not checked yet: the L1's new battery reading against a full discharge on a meter, so please report what you see.

Update

  • On Cairn 108 to 125 (L2 Pro, Heltec V4 touch, Heltec V4 Kit V1, ThinkNode M9, T-Deck, T-Display SF32, T-LoRa Pager): Settings › System › Firmware update: Check, Download, Install. The new build starts on trial and goes back to the old one by itself if it fails to start. On the T-Display SF32, dock the core on the keyboard board first (it carries the Wi-Fi chip).
  • T-Deck started from an SD-card launcher: don't use Update on 121 or earlier (122 and later are fine). Their updater is the one that crashes under a launcher. Instead, copy MeshCore-TDeckPlus-Cairn126-2026-11-01-update.bin to the card and install it from the launcher, as you installed Cairn. From 122 on, the device says "Started by a launcher: update from its SD card" instead of crashing. If you'd rather update over Wi-Fi, write the -full.bin at 0x0 over USB once. This removes the launcher and erases the device, so export your key and contacts first.
  • Over USB on an ESP32 board: the -full.bin goes at 0x0, after Erase Flash, and erases everything. The -update.bin goes at 0x10000 and keeps your data. If the board last updated over Wi-Fi, it may be running from its second slot and keep starting the old build: clear the boot selector first, as in the ESP32 install guide.
  • Wio Tracker L1 Pro, DV1, L1 e-ink, the room server and the T096: double-tap Reset and copy the board's .uf2 onto the drive that appears (UF2 guide). Updating keeps your identity, contacts, channels and settings.
  • Compact repeaters: write the -repeater-update.bin at 0x10000, or copy the -repeater.uf2. They don't update over Wi-Fi.
  • Going back to 125: 126 only adds settings (Flip screen, Screen: Inverted, Trackball). 125 ignores them and keeps everything else.
  • T-LoRa Pager: pick the file for your radio (it's on the box and the back label). SX1262 units take TLoraPager, LR1121 units take TLoraPagerLR1121; the wrong one runs but has no radio. The online update keeps to the radio you installed.
  • A board without Cairn: write the board's -full.bin (ESP32 install guide), copy the .uf2 (UF2 guide), or run the SF32 installer (SF32 install guide).

The compact repeater files (-repeater in the name) are rebuilt from the same tree: Heltec T096 and T114 (.uf2), and the Heltec Wireless Tracker, Tracker V2, V2, V3, V4 and V4-R8 (-repeater-full.bin and -repeater-update.bin). Cairn 126 runs on MeshCore 1.18.0, as 118 to 125 did. SHA256SUMS.txt covers every file: shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt.

Not in this release, each as its own experimental pre-release (what experimental builds are): the LilyGO T5 E-Paper S3 Pro, the SenseCAP MeshPager X2 and the LilyGO T-Display K230.

Added

  • Cyrillic in received messages and names (#25, #3) on the T-Deck, L2 Pro, Heltec V4 touch, M9 and T-LoRa Pager. The fonts grow by about 139 KB. Reading only.
  • T-Deck: Settings › Hardware › Buttons › Trackball Fast, Medium or Slow (1, 2 or 3 sensor pulses a move), and Settings › Display › PANEL › Screen: Inverted for a panel that shows every colour as its negative.
  • Wio Tracker L1 e-ink: Settings › Display › Flip screen (#33). It turns the panel 180 degrees and is saved. Off keeps Cairn's usual way up, so no screen changes on update.
  • Heltec V4-R8 touch kit: portrait by default on a fresh device. A saved orientation is kept.
  • GPS data: the cells grow to fill taller screens, with bigger values where they fit.

Fixed

  • Wio Tracker L1: the battery percent agrees with the app (#36). The device used a generic Li-ion curve and the app Seeed's. The device now uses Seeed's table too, so it reads higher than before in the lower half: 3.7 V is 57 % (was 15 %). Not yet checked against a full discharge of the L1 Pro's cell.
  • T-Deck: the trackball only moved when spun fast. Some balls give one pulse every 0.2 to 0.9 s on a slow roll, and a move took 3 pulses. Every pulse is now a move, the ring stops when the ball does, a long roll no longer speeds up, and a second pulse within 5 ms is ignored as a glitch.
