Hello everyone,
I’d like to give you an important update regarding the Autodesk Fusion 360 for Linux project. After careful consideration, I have decided to move the project to Codeberg for future development. I have already created an account on Codeberg and will start gradually moving the project there.
Why this move?
The decision to use Codeberg/Forgejo is based on my personal convictions and the long-term goals for this project. Codeberg and Forgejo, a substructure of Codeberg, prioritize transparency, independence, and community-oriented development—values that are essential for the sustainable growth of the project. These platforms provide a solid foundation for continuing the work in a non-commercial environment.
Another important factor is the increasing automation and the growing influence of AI on platforms like GitHub. With more decisions being made by automated systems and AI-driven processes, I feel this shifts away from the values that I believe are central to this project’s development. I want to ensure that the project remains driven by human collaboration, and Codeberg offers the best opportunity to pursue this goal.
Interoperability of Git Platforms
I understand that switching to a new platform can be an adjustment for some. However, efforts are already underway to enable synchronization across different Git platforms—much like Mastodon and other federated systems. The aim is for platforms like GitHub, GitLab, and Codeberg to be interconnected, which would make cross-platform collaboration easier.
What does this mean for GitHub?
The project will remain accessible on GitHub, but it will be archived. Active development will now only take place on Codeberg.
I want to clarify that I do not expect everyone to switch to Codeberg. You are free to continue using GitHub if you prefer. However, if you’d like, creating an account on Codeberg might offer a different experience that you enjoy! New issues, pull requests, and development will primarily be handled on Codeberg, and I’ll focus on driving things forward there.
What do I expect from the community?
I hope you will consider contributing to the development on Codeberg/Forgejo. However, if you prefer to stick with GitHub, the project will remain available there. Ideally, we can focus the active development on Codeberg to build a strong, open, and sustainable project.
Conclusion
This move is a personal decision to help foster a more ethical, open, and collaborative development process. I’m excited about this new chapter and appreciate your continued support and involvement!
