ZapFast v0.19.0

ZapFast 0.19.0 holds several WhatsApp numbers in one window: click your own photo to switch between them or add another. It also speaks Turkish and Traditional Chinese, opens chats with Cmd or Ctrl and a number, and fixes a window that shrank each time it reopened, a crash when renaming a group on Windows, a warning about older messages that kept coming back, and files that could not be dropped on the window on Wayland.

Download ZapFast: Mac · Windows · Windows ARM · Linux · Linux ARM · AppImage · AppImage ARM · Flatpak · Debian/Ubuntu · Fedora

On a Mac, brew install --cask crmne/tap/zapfast. On Arch, yay -S zapfast-bin.

New

  • Several WhatsApp numbers in one window. Click your own photo at the top of the chat list: a menu lists your numbers, each with its unread chats, and Add account links another one. Each number keeps its own chats, archive, media and keys. A dot on your photo says another number has unread chats. Your existing number moves into the new layout by itself the first time 0.19.0 starts. By @vxavierr, with the switcher reworked by @crmne. (#334, #22)
  • Turkish and Traditional Chinese. ZapFast follows your system's language, or the one chosen in Settings. Turkish by @brsbrkctn (#341), Traditional Chinese by @a-lang (#350).
  • Open a chat with Cmd or Ctrl and a number. Cmd+1 through Cmd+9 on a Mac, Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+9 elsewhere, open the chat in that place of the list you see, following pins, search and the chosen filter. By @moleh1307. (#345)
  • The chat list scrolls to the top when you send a message, so the chat you just wrote to, now first in the list, stays in view. By @pulgueta. (#360)
  • ZapFast starts in the tray at login even before the panel is ready. Started at login before the desktop's panel, ZapFast could lose its tray icon; it now shows the icon once the panel appears. On a Mac, a start at login puts ZapFast in the menu bar without bringing it to the front. By @crmne.

Fixed

  • The window keeps its size. With the zoom set to something other than 100%, the window came back a little smaller every time it reopened from the tray, until it was tiny. By @crmne; thanks @AlfElFriki, @xodotLBO and @jbouhier. (#293)
  • No crash when renaming a group on Windows. Clicking the pencil to rename a group or a label closed ZapFast when Windows' accessibility features were listening. By @crmne; thanks @Adxa1. (#313)
  • The "older messages" warning only appears when you asked for them. Opening a short chat asked the phone for earlier messages on its own, and a phone with nothing more to send showed the warning on most chats. It now shows only when you scroll to the top and the phone does not answer, and a chat whose beginning ZapFast already has is not asked again. By @crmne; thanks @rumorconsumerr. (#325)
  • Names with several words stay whole. Renaming a contact split a first name like "Maria Clara" at its first space, and group members could show only part of their first name. By @crmne; thanks @fedalc. (#314)
  • Files drop on the window on Wayland, and paste works on Hyprland. Dropping files on ZapFast did nothing on Wayland, and an earlier attempt to fix it stopped pasting on Hyprland. Both work now. By @crmne; thanks @felipemartoni. (#178)
  • A clicked notification brings ZapFast forward on Wayland. The chat opened at the message, but the window stayed minimized or behind. By @Nullpntr1337. (#353)
  • Closing the window on a MacBook with a Touch Bar. The closed window could stay on screen, frozen, while ZapFast kept running. By @crmne; thanks @victorarocha. (#260)
  • ZapFast should start on older Windows graphics drivers, such as those of older Intel chips, and says why in a message box when the driver offers no usable OpenGL at all, instead of closing without a word. By @crmne; thanks @rajarshikhatua. (#349)
  • ZapFast's System font follows your Linux desktop's interface font. By @crmne.
  • Scrolling with a touchpad on Wayland no longer flings the list when your fingers rest on the pad before lifting, and Shift turns a touchpad scroll sideways at the usual speed. By @crmne.
  • The scroll bar stays off the chat filter chips. By @n3ndor. (#355)

Known limitations

  • The Touch Bar fix has not been confirmed on a MacBook with a Touch Bar yet.
  • The account menu is not in the collapsed chat list; widen the list to switch numbers.
  • If ZapFast cannot move your existing number into the new layout on its first start (for example, because the system keyring is locked), it stops before opening a window and says why only in its log. Nothing is moved or lost; unlock the keyring and start it again.
  • Going back to an older ZapFast after 0.19.0 starts it with an empty setup in the old place. Starting 0.19.0 again then refuses until one of the two is moved away.
