This release translates Gofer into Spanish, with date and time format settings, and adds calendar subscriptions by web address, custom folder icons and colors, notification appearance settings and the unread count in the tab title. It also fixes draft recipients, Yahoo login limits from draft autosaves, and CalDAV servers that only take Digest auth.
Languages (#32)
- Gofer can now be shown in Spanish. Settings › Regional has a Language choice: Automatic follows the browser, or a language can be picked. Changing it reloads the page.
- Everything is translated: mail, calendar, contacts, Settings, sign-in, setup and admin, plus the errors and notices the server sends back. New mail notifications, calendar reminders and the "rule finished" notice use the user's language too.
- The pages before sign-in have a language picker in the top corner, and Gofer's version in the bottom corner, linking to its release. A language picked there becomes the user's language once they sign in.
- Replies, forwards and the calendar emails Gofer sends are written in the sender's language. "Re:" and "Fwd:" stay as every mail program reads them, and "RV:" from Outlook in Spanish now counts as a forward.
- Settings › Regional also has Date format, with eight formats shown as December 31 written that way, and Time format, 12-hour or 24-hour. Compact dates and times across Gofer follow them; long dates and headings keep the language's own style. Automatic uses the language's clock: 12-hour in English, 24-hour in Spanish.
- Numbers and sizes use the language's digit grouping and decimal mark.
Calendar subscriptions (#78)
- Calendar → ⋮ → Subscribe to a calendar… takes the https:// or webcal:// address of an iCalendar (.ics) feed, such as public holidays or a calendar shared by link, and shows its events next to the other calendars.
- The address is read once before it is saved, so a wrong one is reported at once. The name and color can be left for the feed to suggest.
- Each subscription is read again on its own interval, from every 15 minutes to once a day (every hour unless chosen).
- Subscriptions are read only: their events can't be edited, deleted or moved. They are listed under Subscriptions in the sidebar, where they can be changed or removed.
- Recurring events are expanded by Gofer, Windows time zone names from Outlook feeds are understood, and an event that can't be read is left out rather than failing the whole calendar.
Folders and appearance
- Folder icon colors can be changed outside Express too, from the sidebar or the folder settings, with a palette and live preview. Custom folders can also pick an icon, and any folder can use outlined or filled icons. Special folders keep their symbols, and Express keeps its original artwork.
- Virtual views and tags can have their color and icon style changed the same way.
- These choices are kept through provider sync, and Reset brings back the defaults.
- Local folders can be moved inside another Local folder, or to the top, by dragging them in the sidebar or with Move folder… in their menu and in Settings' Folders dialog. (#83)
- Desktop notifications can choose what their title, text and icon show, with a live preview in Settings › Advanced. They show the latest sender with a count of the other new messages, and sender avatars as round icons.
- The tab title starts with the unread count, as "(3) Gofer - Mail", so a pinned tab shows when new mail arrives. Settings › Advanced chooses between the inboxes' count, every folder outside Sent, Drafts, Spam and Trash, or Off. (#76)
Compose and drafts
- A draft no longer loses its whole To, Cc or Bcc field when one entry isn't an address yet, such as a half-typed name, and Bcc is kept through IMAP sync. (#80)
- Long recipient lists fold into one line with a "+N" chip while the field isn't focused, instead of running past the composer's edge. (#82)
- Esc and a click outside the compose dialog ask the same keep or discard question as its close button, instead of dropping an unsaved draft and leaving Compose greyed out.
- Draft autosaves and Sent copies reuse the IMAP sessions mail sync keeps instead of logging in each time, which tripped Yahoo's login limit after about ten autosaves. Drafts also sync again on servers that refuse to search by header, such as Yahoo. (#79)
- When a server refuses a login for going over its limit, Gofer waits 5 minutes before trying that mailbox again, doubling up to an hour while it keeps refusing, and shows why.
Fixes and polish
- Sending from the inline compose pane brings the mail list back instead of leaving an empty reader until a refresh. (#77)
- CalDAV and CardDAV servers that only accept Digest auth can be added. Calendars on servers that fail to expand recurring events are now read and expanded by Gofer instead of never loading. (#75)
- A message body that fails to download shows why, with a button to try again, instead of loading forever. (#74)
- Switching between Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Settings builds the new screen right away from the page, and only the data comes from the server. Contacts filters use mail's pill strip, and picking an address book changes the list in place.
- With managed sign-in, pages, notifications and reminders read the user's saved language and date settings from their own store. Before, they were looked up in the shared database, so they didn't apply.
- Profile exports leave Local folders out, so importing a profile from someone with Local folders no longer fails as a damaged file. Profiles exported before are imported fine too.
- The mail export list shows Local folders as Local, not IMAP.
- English wording changes: calendar times use the 12-hour clock like the rest of Gofer, dates and times are joined with a comma, and counts pick singular or plural ("1 account", "Synced 1 event").
Upgrade notes
- ⚠️ This release upgrades the database (schema 136). You can't go back to an older release afterwards, so back up your data directory first.
- Calendar subscriptions are fetched like CalDAV servers: a feed on a private address needs a private-target exception, and one over plain HTTP an HTTP plaintext exception, under Mail security.
- Subscriptions belong to Local folders and aren't carried in profile exports yet.
Gofer remains pre-1.0. I'm actively using and improving it, but please keep backups and test your setup before relying on it for anything critical.
