github cristianadrielbraun/gofer v0.19.0

This release adds creating, renaming and deleting calendars and address books from Gofer, a mail layout with no reading pane, printing messages, and Outlook change notifications for calendars and contacts. It also fixes calendar-only and contacts-only accounts in open and personal mode, as reported by several people.

Calendars and address books (#53)

  • Calendar sync can create a calendar on Google, Outlook, CalDAV and JMAP accounts, and Contacts can create an address book on CardDAV and JMAP accounts. The new one is listed ticked, ready to sync.
  • Calendar-only and contacts-only accounts can create one from their own dialog too. A CalDAV or CardDAV server with none yet now signs in and offers to create one, instead of saying no server was found.
  • A synced calendar's menu in the Calendar sidebar can rename it or delete it on its provider. Deleting warns that its events go too, for every app and device that uses it. An account's main Google or Microsoft calendar, and Google's family calendar, can't be deleted.
  • Address books can be renamed and deleted from the Contacts step or the contacts-only account's dialog. Deleting removes the book and its contacts from the server and takes it out of the account's contact sync.
  • Google normally lets Gofer rename and delete only calendars it created. Calendar settings and the sidebar offer to allow full calendar access, by signing in again, to manage the others you own. A reconnect started from Calendar brings you back there.
  • With full calendar access, a Google calendar shared with you can be renamed just for you or removed from your list, as in Google Calendar. Its owner and everyone else still see it as it was.
  • The Contacts step now explains why Google and Outlook have no address books to choose or add: each keeps an account's contacts in one. Google Contacts labels and Outlook lists aren't separate address books.

Calendar sidebar

  • Each account lists its unsynced calendars under Other calendars, folded away, with a button to start syncing one.
  • A synced calendar's menu has Show only this calendar and Stop syncing. Stopping moves it back under Other calendars and leaves it untouched on its provider.
  • Gofer reads calendar lists again in the background every five minutes, sooner when a calendar can no longer be found, and when you press Calendar's refresh button. New calendars appear unticked, and calendars removed on the provider go away instead of failing every refresh.
  • The sidebar updates in place, keeping its scroll position and open Other calendars sections when calendars are renamed, deleted, started or stopped, or change on the provider.

Outlook notifications

  • With Outlook change notifications on, Microsoft now tells Gofer about changes to the calendars and contacts the account syncs too, so they refresh without waiting for the next scheduled check.
  • A calendar notification also reads the account's calendar list, at most once a minute, so a calendar made in Outlook appears under Other calendars once it gets its first event.
  • The Outlook Graph sync card shows separate states for Mail, Calendar and Contacts, and says notifications work only when every service the account needs works. Test connection checks each of them and shows Microsoft's reason for any failure.

No reading pane (#58)

  • Email's Pane layout has a third choice, No reading pane. The message list fills the page, and an opened message takes its place.
  • A click selects a message; a double click or Enter opens it. Escape, the back arrow or the browser's Back return to the list, with that message still selected and the list's scroll position kept.
  • Opening and closing a message animate, unless reduced motion is on.

Fixes and polish

  • Moving between messages keeps the reader's toolbar and reply bar in place while the next message loads. The loading frame shows the correct sender and subject, instead of briefly putting the subject in the sender's place and the message preview in the subject's.
  • Print in the message menu now opens the print dialog, with the subject, sender, recipients, date and attachment names above the message, in light colors. Remote images print if you had shown them, and long messages print across every page.
  • Calendar-only and contacts-only accounts work in open and personal mode again: adding, finding and editing them no longer say Method not allowed, and Add email works there too. Each now gets its own internal ID, so adding a second one no longer conflicts with the first, and their calendars sync with their own login. (#65, #67)
  • Archive is greyed out for mail whose account has no Archive folder, in the list, reader and right-click menu. A click explains why and offers to choose or create one; a mixed selection also offers to archive the others. Swiping to archive on a phone explains it too. (#63)
  • Sending no longer leaves Working… on screen and the compose window open when live updates don't arrive: checking the send's status finishes it too. (#64)
  • Deleting or moving mail from the reader no longer reports failure and puts the message back after it worked. Refreshing unread counts no longer interrupts archive, read or spam actions either, and deleting says whether it moved mail to Trash or deleted it permanently. (#66)
  • Deeply nested folders have shorter names in sync settings, such as Trash/…/Nested three, with the whole path in a tooltip. Their chips stay inside the box and no longer repeat its real-time label.
  • Saving a calendar-only or contacts-only account no longer briefly changes the dialog's height.

Upgrade notes

  • ⚠️ This release upgrades the database (schema 133). You can't go back to an older release afterwards, so back up your data directory first.
  • Google accounts connected before this release keep working. Reconnect one to let Gofer create calendars; full calendar access is optional and is asked for only when you choose to allow it. Later reconnects keep access you already granted.
  • Outlook calendar and contact notifications use the existing webhook and permissions. They follow the account's change notifications setting and which services it syncs.

Gofer remains pre-1.0. I'm actively using and improving it, but please keep backups and test your setup before relying on it for anything critical.
