github cristianadrielbraun/gofer v0.18.0

This release adds search across folders, accounts or the whole mailbox, calendar-only and contacts-only accounts for standalone CalDAV and CardDAV servers, and a Custom From in compose for sending from a one-time address.

Scoped search (#57)

  • The search bar starts with a scope menu: this folder, all accounts, one account, or chosen folders with their subfolders, with Spam and Trash left out unless you add them.
  • Each result shows the account and folder it lives in, in a strip at the top of its card. The table view shows it once for each run of results from the same place, pinned under the column names.
  • The ? in the search bar lists every search command. New ones are filetype:, larger:, smaller:, to-domain: and no:attachment, no:tags and no:thread. to:, cc: and bcc: now each look only in their own field, and account: takes an address.
  • Searches on attachments, and plain search words, no longer match inline images. filetype: also matches images, audio and video by their extension.
  • Search runs when you press Enter instead of on every key. Clearing it in the results takes you back to the folder.
  • Open search results update when sync changes mail in their scope.
  • Search results and filtered or sorted folders reopen at the message you had open, and paginated lists open on its page.

Calendar-only and contacts-only accounts (#61)

  • Add Account has a menu for an account with no mail: a CalDAV server for its calendars, or a CardDAV server for its contacts, such as Radicale or Davis.
  • Its dialog asks only for the server and its login, lists the calendars or address books it finds, and saves the ones you tick. Edit opens the same dialog.
  • Add email turns one into a regular account over IMAP, iCloud or JMAP, and its calendars or contacts keep signing in with the login they had.
  • These accounts stay out of compose, mail rules, and mail export, import and transfer.
  • Profiles carry them with their server, login and calendars or address books. They import waiting for their password, which their own dialog takes.

Custom From (#52)

  • The From menu in compose ends with Custom From…, which opens a row for a display name, an address and the server to send it through: the account's own, or one of its identities' own SMTP servers.
  • Servers known to refuse other addresses, such as Gmail and JMAP without a catch-all domain, are greyed out with the reason. Those that may refuse or rewrite it carry a warning, and JMAP servers name the domains they take.
  • Send, Schedule and Save Draft check the address first. Scheduled messages and drafts keep the address and the way of sending it chose.

Fixes and polish

  • The calendar remembers whether you last used Month or Week. (#59)
  • Startup no longer rebuilds every conversation when a single message is missing one, such as a draft saved just before a restart, which took minutes on a large mailbox.
  • The mail list no longer jumps when rows load above the ones you're looking at.
  • Starting and ending a search, switching folders and other list changes animate the cards smoothly. This is the animation I always had in mind for the list, and I've finally been able to polish it the way I wanted.
  • Filters and the calendar's Today and arrow buttons have a new look, and loading placeholders match the current layout.

Upgrade notes

  • This release doesn't change the database, so you can go back to v0.17.0 if needed.
  • An exported profile that includes a calendar-only or contacts-only account is saved in a new profile format (version 2). Older releases can't import it and say it's from a newer version. Profiles without such accounts keep the old format, so older releases still import them.
  • In managed mode, a calendar-only or contacts-only account whose login is an email address must match the allowed domains list. A plain username is checked only against the allowed servers list.

Gofer remains pre-1.0. I'm actively using and improving it, but please keep backups and test your setup before relying on it for anything critical.
