v1.4.0: Thinner divider lines, version number and update notices

latest release: v1.4.1

A fix for the divider lines, plus two things to make life easier if you self-host.

Divider lines stay thin when pasted

The two horizontal lines in the signature, above the social icons and above the disclaimer, could turn into thick coloured bands once the signature was pasted into an email client. The preview showed a hairline, the real thing showed a bar.

The cause: each line was a one pixel tall table cell filled with your accent colour. Some clients, Proton Mail and certain versions of Outlook among them, enforce a minimum height on table rows. The cell was stretched to that minimum and your accent colour filled the whole thing.

The lines are now drawn as a cell border instead. A border stays one pixel no matter what the client does to the row height, and the spacing around the lines is unchanged. If you have an older signature in place, generate it again and paste it in to pick up the fix.

Thanks @mptpro for reporting it with such clear screenshots (#8).

The version is now shown on the page

The bottom of the page now shows which version you are running, next to the MIT License link, and links to the releases page. Handy if you self-host and want to know whether a fix has reached you yet.

You get told when a new version is out

Self-hosted copies have no way of knowing that a release has happened, so the page now checks for you. Once a day it reads the latest public release number from GitHub, and if your copy is older, a small dismissible banner appears at the top with a link to the release notes.

This stays true to how the rest of the tool works:

  • Nothing about you or your signature is sent. It reads a public version number, nothing more
  • The result is cached for 24 hours, so it is at most one small request a day
  • It stays silent when you are offline, when you open the file straight from disk, or if the request fails for any reason
  • Want no outside requests at all? Open index.html and set UPDATE_CHECK to false. The banner never appears and no request is made

Updating, and updating automatically

Docker users on the latest tag can update with:

docker pull ghcr.io/clarkemedia/email-signature-generator:latest
docker compose up -d

If you run something like Watchtower against the latest tag, new releases are picked up on their own. There is an example compose file in the README. Prefer to stay in control? Pin a version tag such as :1.4.0 or :1.4 and move when you are ready.

Running a plain copy on a web server? Replace index.html with the one from this release.

Upgrading

  • Live site: https://signatures.clarkemedia.ie
  • Docker: docker pull ghcr.io/clarkemedia/email-signature-generator:latest, or pin :1.4.0, then restart your container
  • Self-hosted: replace your index.html with the one from this release

Images are built for linux/amd64, linux/arm64 and linux/arm/v7.

Your saved details and exported settings files carry over untouched.

Thanks to everyone reporting issues and sending ideas. It is a free side project, and the feedback is what keeps it improving. If it has saved you some time, you can buy me a coffee ☕
