github chrisuthe/SendspinDroid v2.0.0-Beta19

pre-release3 hours ago

Fixes for the issues reported against Beta18, a reworked Stats for Nerds, and the Music Assistant login removed. As with Beta18, this build needs a server that speaks Sendspin 1.0.0-rc1: Music Assistant 2.11 or newer.

Fixed

  • The player no longer drops off the server when the app is in the background. A connected player that was not playing was not kept as a foreground service, so Android cut its network within seconds of leaving the app and it could not reconnect until the app was opened again. The connection is now held, with its notification, for as long as the app is connected or reconnecting. This is the cause behind #262 and very likely #263 and #14; it was not specific to High Power Mode.
  • Transport controls no longer freeze after leaving with Back and returning (#254).
  • Servers found by mDNS over IPv6 can connect. The port was being joined to an IPv6 address without brackets, which sent the connection to the wrong address. An IPv4 address is now preferred when the server advertises one (#264). A saved server with an IPv6 address also survives an app restart.
  • The volume slider no longer jumps to 100% during a reconnect (#255).
  • Landscape: on first run, servers found on the network now show beside the welcome card instead of below the fold (#28).
  • Keyboard: in the add-server form the field being typed into stays in view, Back/Next/Save stay above the keyboard, and the keyboard's own key moves you on. In settings dialogs, Done confirms.
  • A protocol message queued just before a connection ended can no longer go out on the next connection ahead of its activation.

New

  • Artist photo. When the server provides one (Music Assistant does), swipe the album art sideways to see the artist, and back.
  • Stats for Nerds, reworked. One line at the top says whether playback is in sync, followed by sections for sync, clock, correction, buffer, protocol and network, each with a note on what the numbers mean. It now shows the stream's sample rate and bit depth (#110), the roles the server activated, and the encryption and pairing state.

Sync

  • The clock settles faster after connecting. The time-sync round trip is now measured at the point the request leaves and the reply arrives, not around the app's own encryption and parsing. On a test tablet over Wi-Fi the measured round trip fell from 12.4 ms to 7.6 ms and the clock's uncertainty got under 1 ms in about 35 seconds instead of about two minutes.

Removed

  • The Music Assistant login. Adding a server no longer asks "Sendspin or Music Assistant"; it goes straight to finding the server. The second connection to Music Assistant's own API is gone, and with it the favourite button. Music Assistant still works as before as a Sendspin server, and servers saved as "Music Assistant" keep working. Stored Music Assistant login tokens are deleted from the device. Track titles may reach the lock screen about a second later than they did for users who had logged in.
  • On Android TV, the cinematic now-playing layout is used for every server. It has no on-screen volume slider; the remote controls volume.
  • Unused libraries and resources.

Correction to the Beta18 notes

Beta18's notes said "Seek from the app". Seeking works from the lock screen, the notification and Android Auto; there is no scrubber on the Now Playing screen.

Known issues

  • A cold connect makes small sync corrections in both directions for the first half minute or so while the clock estimate settles. They are far too small to hear (#307).
  • Dynamic pairing code has not been tested on a device against an rc1 server.
  • Sync has been measured on one tablet model; reports from other devices are welcome.
  • Not yet checked on a device: Android TV, the IPv6 changes on an IPv6-only network, and landscape on a phone.

If you reported #14, #28, #262, #263 or #264, please try this build and say whether it is fixed for you.
