Co-op hotfix

  • Split-screen co-op: one player on keyboard and mouse with one on a controller works again. Once the keyboard has been used, a controller's START joins as player 2, whoever touched what first.
  • Split-screen co-op: if a controller is already player 1's, hold START on it to give player 1 to the keyboard and join as player 2. Playing alone after using the keyboard, hold START on a controller to make it player 1's.
  • What's new: a hotfix now shows the notes of the release it fixes in full, right below the fix.

Everything new since v0.1.68

Launcher

  • Character tab: choose who you play as, made on your computer from your own disc: Princess Peach, Shadow Mario, Il Piantissimo and Bowser Jr., and our own Rivet and Roxxy. Mario's colours sit beside him to customize, and Animations shows any character in any of Mario's moves.
  • Character tab: Luigi, from Super Mario Eclipse. If you have set Eclipse up once, the launcher makes him from it, with Eclipse on or off, and he plays in Super Mario Sunshine with Mario's moves and FLUDD, in his own cap, speaking as Eclipse's Luigi does: Mario's voice from your disc, a little lower. Online, players who haven't set Eclipse up see him as Mario.
  • Character tab: Shadow Luigi, Luigi as the paintbrush impostor, see-through and shimmering as Shadow Mario is, in the game too. Like Luigi, he comes from the Super Mario Eclipse you set up once.
  • Character tab: outfits. Keep as many as you like, each a character in your own colours with its own name, as tabs over the character; the one you open is who you play as. Each tab shows a portrait drawn from the character's own model, Mario in that outfit's colours, and when they don't all fit, the tabs scroll sideways with New outfit always at the end.
  • Character tab: New outfit asks who wears it, Change gives an outfit to someone else, and double-clicking a tab renames it. Mario's colours, Shine shirt, sunglasses and FLUDD save into his outfit as you change them; the other characters' colours come later.
  • Character tab: Make player 2 picks the outfit the second player plays as in co-op, Mario's in its colours. A P2 badge marks it on its tab. Without one, player 2 is Luigi as before.
  • Online, the launcher makes any character you haven't made yet before the game starts, so you see the other players as the characters they play.
  • Character packs in mods/characters, your own included, stay when the game updates.
  • Play co-op is gone from the menu beside Play: a second player can now join any game. When there is nothing else to choose there (the game is up to date, with its HD visuals), the ▾ beside Play goes too. The Character tab still picks who player 2 plays as.
  • Saves: Copy Sunshine progress to Eclipse. Super Mario Eclipse keeps all of Sunshine's levels, so a Sunshine file's Shines, blue coins and unlocks carry over: choose a Sunshine file and an Eclipse file, and Eclipse starts from there, closer to its new levels. Your Sunshine save stays as it is, and your saves are backed up first.
  • Saves: choosing a backup under Restore a backup now shows what it holds: File A, B and C of Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Eclipse, with each file's Shines and blue coins, or Empty.
  • Prepare only: with Super Mario Eclipse switched on, or any game not set up yet, ▾ beside Prepare & play now has Prepare only, which gets the game ready without starting it. Update only now also gets the HD visuals and Eclipse's downloads, so Play later starts straight away.
  • Achievements are off in online games by default, since the others can earn them for you. Earn achievements online, on the Online page, turns them back on. Playing alone or split-screen still unlocks them.
  • Achievements in dark mode: the page now goes dark with the rest of the launcher, instead of staying white. Unlocked achievements glow gold, locked ones sit back, and the filters, stage list and progress ring match.
  • Customize Mario in dark mode: its colour panel now goes dark with the rest of the launcher. Before, it stayed white, and the Use in the game switch's title couldn't be read.
  • Settings now use the game's own names for the options its settings menu also has, so they match: Resolution, Anisotropic filtering, Upscaler, Aspect ratio, V-Sync, Fullscreen, Shader warm-up and more, with their choices named as in the game.
  • Maximizing the launcher now leaves the Windows taskbar in view: the button beside minimize maximizes and restores the window instead of making it full screen. F11 still switches full screen.
  • Updates free more disk space: the game's first install folder is now removed once two updates have replaced it, like other old versions, with your HD packs kept, and so are game builds that a rebuild replaced or that didn't finish. Before, these stayed and could take several GB.
  • Fixed Download port source failing on drives that can't make hard links, such as an SD card or USB drive formatted exFAT (often D: on a handheld): unpacking the build tools stopped with thousands of "Invalid argument" errors. There, the build tools now unpack more slowly, with copies in place of links.

Game

  • Characters: play as anyone you choose on the launcher's Character tab, with their own model, voice and FLUDD. While you play alone, F4 switches to the next character.
  • Online, each player is drawn as the character they chose in the launcher, in its own colours and with its own moves and FLUDD. Players as Mario keep their own colours or their slot's, as before.
  • Split-screen co-op is always on. In any game, a second player presses START on another controller to join, and holds START for a second and a half to leave, and the screen goes back to one. A card at the top of the screen says what to press. Until it joins, another controller no longer moves player 1.
  • Split-screen co-op: a START pressed during a load, a cutscene or the pause menu joins as soon as play starts, so there is no need to press it over and over. If player 2's controller disconnects, their place waits 10 seconds for it to come back. To move player 1 to another controller, hold START on it.
  • Split-screen co-op: player 2 can play as any character from the Character tab, or as Mario in their own colours, instead of always being Luigi. Player 2 still speaks with player 1's voice.
  • Split-screen co-op: on Pinna Park's roller coaster (the Mecha-Bowser fight and the coaster balloons), player 2 now rides a car of their own right behind Mario's, instead of being left to walk around the park.
  • Split-screen co-op: POINKs in Super Mario Eclipse (and the Puffers in Super Mario Sunshine) now stick to player 2's FLUDD too, and they can pump them up and fire them. Before, one that grabbed player 2 jumped over to player 1's nozzle. Each player can now carry one at the same time.
  • Split-screen co-op: going into or out of a building in Delfino Plaza, like the raccoons' blue coin shop, no longer sends the other player straight back through the door. Before, the players could end up split between inside and outside, the camera showed empty sky or looked down at nothing, and Mario could be left high above the plaza.
  • Precise Frame Timing in the game's settings menu (pause, then Y), under Display, on Windows: steadier frame times and less judder, for a little more CPU use. It's off by default.
  • Mods: the game has mod API 1.6. Mods can offer every episode of a world from the start or start the episode select on another episode, have a Shine taken without its Shine Get so Mario stays in the stage, and change or stop spin jumps like any other move. The warp menu and save states no longer count as walking through a pipe or painting, so mods that shuffle stages leave them alone.
  • Server mods can paint goop over any part of a stage that has goop, clean it away, and colour it: each patch of goop in a colour of its own, keeping its look, and everyone in the game sees the same goop, including players who join later.
  • GameCube adapters on Linux and Steam Deck: an adapter in Wii U mode (Nintendo's or a Mayflash) now works in the game. Before, the game could open it but never started it, so its controllers did nothing, mostly after Allow access in Settings, Controls.
  • Installing into a folder with brackets in its name, such as Super Mario Sunshine (USA), no longer fails while building the game with "syntax error near unexpected token" on Linux, Steam Deck and Mac.
  • Save states: saving no longer fails with "the game is busy" when the game is only briefly reading the disc or mixing sound: it waits a moment and saves, and if it still cannot, the message says what was busy. Loading a state keeps you as the character you play as now, whoever the state was saved as.
  • Achievements: Sinking Feeling (Super Mario Eclipse) now unlocks when you sink in Erto Rock's quicksand goop, Cleaning House (Super Mario Eclipse) when you defeat the boss in Hotel Lacrima's hideout, and Palm Tree Blast no longer fails when you step onto the sand castle itself on your way in. Only the beach's sand counts.
  • Radar: the Hotel Lobby's Secret (Sirena Beach, episode 2) now shows its own course on the radar and the full map. Before, it showed the secret course of Bianco Hills' episode 3, which is built on the same ground.
  • Super Mario Eclipse radar: the secret courses of Lancia Peaks and Erto Rock, and three in Peach's Castle, now show their own course on the radar and the full map instead of one of Super Mario Sunshine's secret courses.
  • Super Mario Eclipse: Eclipse took out the movie of Shadow Mario stealing FLUDD before a secret level, leaving a blank one-frame movie in its place, and Pianta Village still asks for it. That showed a black screen with "(A) Skip" for about two seconds before the level started. A movie like that now ends right away, with no black screen and no prompt.
  • Pianta Village's Chain Chomplets: at 60 and 120 FPS, a Chomplet's tail pulled harder than it should while you held it (about 1.4 times as hard at 60 FPS and 2.3 times at 120). It now pulls the same as at 30 FPS at every frame rate.
  • Fixed FLUDD's water cleaning no goop with texture packs that repaint it, such as Super Mario Eclipse's HD pack.
  • Online: having an NPC's text box (or a sign) open when another player gets a Shine no longer crashes your game. The text box now closes and you join their Shine Get, and the same goes for the host leaving for another world or starting a cutscene: your text box closes and you go along.
  • Online: another player getting a Shine while you are watching a cutscene, such as a Shine coming out, no longer crashes your game. Before, their Shine Get played without its "Shine Get!" text and then the game closed. Now it waits for the cutscene to end, then plays as usual.
