OnionHop 3.9

A much smarter Smart Connect for censored countries, Tor stopping properly when OnionHop exits, webtunnel with an upstream proxy, and visible scrollbars again.

Smart Connect

  • Follows Tor's own advice for censored countries. For the countries Tor itself curates (China, Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Belarus, Myanmar, Egypt, Hong Kong), Smart Connect now tries the transports in the order Tor recommends there and uses the bridge lines Tor ships for them, such as Snowflake with the domain fronts that get through in that country, an Amazon SQS rendezvous for China and the AMP cache for Turkmenistan. These are the settings behind Tor Browser's Connection Assist. A copy ships with the app, since Tor's site is blocked in those countries, and it is refreshed through Tor after connecting.
  • Asks Tor for bridges meant for your country. obfs4 and webtunnel bridges are requested from Tor's bridge service for the detected country first, the way Tor Browser does, then topped up with the OnionHop collector's tested bridges.
  • Plans in seconds on networks that block lookups. The address and country lookups used to run one after another, each waiting up to 30 seconds where it was blocked. They now run side by side and give up after 8 seconds.
  • Knows the country even when it cannot be looked up. It goes by the country detected on an earlier connect, or by this computer's time zone, instead of "unknown", which meant trying direct Tor first.
  • Routes that are slow but working get the time they need. Once Tor has completed a handshake through a route, the attempt continues as long as it keeps making progress (up to 4 minutes), instead of being cut off at 45 seconds and replaced by worse options.
  • Learns what fails on your network. A route that failed on your network is tried last there for the next two days, instead of costing the same wait on every connect.
  • Its quick checks only skip routes that are dead, instead of reordering working ones by how many bridges answered.

Fixed

  • Tor stops when OnionHop exits (#87). Closing OnionHop while connected could leave tor.exe running with its SOCKS port open. Tor now stops first on exit, and on Windows the engines are tied to OnionHop, so Windows ends them along with it however it exits (even from Task Manager).
  • webtunnel bridges work with an upstream proxy (#88). With an upstream proxy set, webtunnel now runs through lyrebird, which can use the proxy.
  • Snowflake works with the AMP cache. AMP mode (also forced by Smart Connect in China, Iran and Turkmenistan) used a combination Snowflake's broker rejects, so it never connected that way. AMP lines now use the route that works, fronted through Google like Tor's own.
  • Bridge downloads no longer use up a Smart Connect attempt on networks that silently drop the bridge sources: fetching gives up after 12 seconds and uses the saved bridges.
  • The page scrollbars show again, and pages scroll with the keyboard (Page Up/Down from anywhere; arrows, Home and End after a click on the page). Without a mouse wheel, the lower part of Settings could not be reached on smaller screens.
  • The bridge scanner checks Snowflake and meek against the domain they actually connect to, so working lines no longer show as unreachable.
