OnionHop 3.8.6

Arti 2.7 and a much better ArtiHop, the Arti and ArtiHop engines working on PCs without the Visual C++ Redistributable, LAN sharing addresses on Home, and a Linux fix for local proxy mode.

Fixed

  • The Arti and ArtiHop engines no longer need the Visual C++ Redistributable on Windows. Both were built against vcruntime140.dll, which Windows does not ship and OnionHop did not bundle, so on a PC without the redistributable (common on clean or trimmed Windows 10 installs) the engine could not start at all. Both now have the C runtime built in.
  • Arti engine: a copy left running by a crashed or force-closed session is stopped again. That leftover keeps Arti's state locked, so the next connect fails until it is gone. OnionHop checks where a leftover program lives before stopping it, and Arti protects its process from exactly that check, so the Arti engine stayed broken until a reboot. OnionHop now asks Windows for the program's path in a way Arti allows.
  • Linux: Proxy Mode no longer demands root when Smart Connect is off (#84). "DNS leak protection", on by default, turns on a system DNS proxy that needs root on Linux. With Smart Connect off, that made OnionHop refuse to connect even in local proxy mode, which never needs root. It now connects and leaves the system's DNS alone, with a note in the log; apps that send host names through the proxy still have them resolved by Tor. TUN mode still asks for root.

Added

  • LAN sharing addresses on Home (#85). With LAN access allowed, Home now shows the addresses other devices on your network can use while you are connected (SOCKS5 and, where there is one, HTTP), with copy buttons. It picks the address your network actually reaches, skipping OnionHop's own tunnel adapter and VM adapters.
  • Arti 2.7.0 (from 2.3.0), with SQLite built in, so the separate sqlite3.dll is gone. It is built with a fix for an upstream bug in 2.7.0 that hangs Arti on Windows at 100% CPU while it reads the Tor network directory.
  • ArtiHop 0.2.0, on Arti 2.7:
    • New Identity works with ArtiHop. New connections switch to fresh circuits on request, instead of needing a reconnect.
    • .onion sites work through ArtiHop. It was built without Arti's onion service support, so every .onion address failed.
    • Sites and apps are kept on separate circuits the way Tor does by default: different SOCKS credentials (Tor Browser uses them per site) or different devices on your LAN never share one.
    • Failing pages fail faster. A name that does not exist or a refused port is no longer retried on three fresh circuits before the error comes back, and apps get a proper "host not found" or "connection refused" instead of a generic failure.
    • The connect bar moves while ArtiHop starts, with what it is doing in the status.
    • Faster relaying, a 30 second limit for clients that never finish the SOCKS handshake, and failing sites no longer fill the log with warnings.
