github burmilla/os v3.0.0-beta3

About this release

This is the third beta version of BurmillaOS v3. It is a maintenance release on top of beta2: System Docker was updated, the build moved to a current tool chain, and two upgrade and virtualization issues from the beta2 feedback are fixed. Please be aware that there may still be bugs.

Release notes

Fixes

  • rancher.docker.engine: latest is now resolved to the latest Docker engine of the service repository, so systems upgraded from v2 whose engine was stored as latest boot with a working Docker instead of failing to pull os-docker:latest. Fixes #218 (#234)
  • The state partition is mounted with discard on ext4, xfs, btrfs and f2fs, so thin provisioned disks (Hyper-V dynamic VHDX, SSD backed VMs) get freed space back. Fixes #165 (#235)
  • Docker engines are sorted by version, so "latest" picks the highest version (#236)
  • /etc/wpa_supplicant-<interface>.conf, which holds the Wi-Fi passphrase, is created with mode 0600 (#236)
  • Several errors that were silently dropped, for example a parse error in a compose file loaded through extends, are reported again (#236)

Removed

  • Raspberry Pi image build and the leftover CoreOS cloud-init code that ros never used (etcd, fleet, flannel, locksmith, units, ...). The cloud-config format itself is unchanged (#236)
  • The poll notice shown at console login (#236)
  • ros install and ros os upgrade are allowed on every architecture (#236)

Build and release

  • The release build failed on the new tool chain (bash 5.2) and the first beta3 ISO did not boot because System Docker 17.06.115+ no longer decompresses xz; both fixed before this release (#241)
  • New build-test workflow builds an unpublished ISO from any branch for boot testing, and the release workflow now takes the version and type (beta, rc, ga) as inputs and creates the tag and the draft release itself (#241, #243)

Optional services (os-services v3.0.x, since beta2)

  • fleet-client: the Fleet Manager is now called BurFleet; SSH key management and SSH hardening, local container health, Swarm and environment names in the API path, reporting support for older BurmillaOS and RancherOS hosts (burmilla/os-services#98, #101, #102, #106)
  • open-vm-tools and qemu-guest-agent are built from the Debian 13 packages and stop cleanly (burmilla/os-services#104, #105, #107)
  • Service images are built on an Ubuntu 24.04 build image; the unmaintained modem-manager and amazon-metadata services were removed

Known issues

  • AppArmor is not enabled in the arm64 kernel
  • Hyper-V VSS and fcopy daemons are not started (KVP works)

Those changes can be reviewed in pull requests #234, #235, #236, #238, #241 and #243 and in the linked repositories.
