0.60.0 is out 🎉

This release is special for me. I build emuze with web technologies because that’s where I have the most experience, and I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved over the years. I’ve always wanted to help out in this wonderful emulation community, but aside from testing, I couldn’t do much to help with the emulators I love because I struggled with C++ code, which most emulators are written in. But sometimes you feel forced to try and try again. Since v0.59.0, I’ve successfully added a change to RMG to use the SDL GUID to identify a gamepad more reliably, and I forked Mednafen with mednafen-sdl3 to greatly expand gamepad support. Those changes are just baby steps in the grand scheme of things, but they felt great, and I hope I can build on them in the future.

Those who have read some of my older release notes already know about samueru-sama. He is part of the Package Forge Dev Team and has helped me a lot in the past with creating AppImages for emulators. For this release, he guided me on how to use quick-sharun to bundle the emulators much more efficiently. This resulted in an emuze AppImage that is much smaller and compatible with more Linux distributions than before.

With 0.59.0, I bundled open-source implementations for several BIOS files. With this release, I added saturn-open-bios for the Sega Saturn and OpenPS2BIOS for the PlayStation 2. Both are quite new and won’t work with every game, but they’re great if you don’t have an official BIOS.

As a kid, it felt magical to play games with more than one friend at a time. More often than not, we played Mario Kart 64 rather than Crash Team Racing, even though we thought Crash Team Racing was the better game. Of course, there was a solution back then in the form of a multitap, but we didn’t have one or the money to buy one. With this release, emuze will configure a multitap for supported games for the Sony PlayStation, Sony PlayStation 2, and Sega Saturn.

Please let me know what you think of it in the emuze discord.
