⚠️ Self-host Helm chart v2.1.0 upgrades the bundled SQL Server to 2025 ⚠️

This release updates the default bundled database image to SQL Server 2025 (mcr.microsoft.com/mssql/server:2025-CU5-ubuntu-24.04), up from SQL Server 2022 (2022-CU22-ubuntu-22.04). The SQL Server version moves from 2022 to 2025, and the base OS moves from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04. If your deployment uses the chart-managed database, review the action below before running helm upgrade.

🚨 Bundled SQL Server upgraded from 2022 to 2025

The default tag for the chart-managed MSSQL container has been updated:

The first time SQL Server 2025 starts against your existing data files, it upgrades the system and user databases in place. This upgrade is irreversible. Once the databases are on the 2025 format, a SQL Server 2022 instance can no longer attach or start them, and rolling the chart back to an earlier version will not roll the data files back.

Action Required

This applies only if you use the chart-managed database (database.enabled: true). If you run an external or self-managed (BYO) database, nothing changes here, since its image is controlled outside the chart.
Before upgrading:

Back up your databases or take a snapshot of the MSSQL persistent volume so you can restore if needed. Since the upgrade cannot be reversed, a verified backup is the only way back to 2022.
Upgrade during a maintenance window. The database upgrade runs when the new container first starts, so the pod can take longer than usual to become ready.
If you are not ready to move to SQL Server 2025, pin the previous image tag in your values.yaml to stay on 2022 until you are:
