GalaxyQuest 0.1.9

GalaxyQuest 0.1.9 adds a view tilt, a setting for spinning with a shake and save backups, and fixes the black screen after the castle garden's first hill when the movies were left out. Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest 3S are tested and working.

New

  • View tilt on the Screen and Diorama tabs of the VR settings (in the pause menu) lifts the whole scene round your head. Use it to play looking straight ahead instead of down, reclined or lying down. The controllers, the pointer and the Star Ball's tilt follow the tilted view. (#2)
  • Spin shake strength on the Game tab sets how hard you have to shake a controller to spin.
  • Save backups: tools/saves.py, in GalaxyQuest-converter.zip, copies your saves to the computer and puts them back after a reinstall or on another headset. See the README. (#7)

Fixes

  • Without the movies, the prologue movie at the bottom of the castle garden's first hill left a black screen. The game now skips any movie that wasn't converted, and the story goes on. (#5)
  • Quitting no longer crashes the app on its way out. (#8)
  • The source builds on case-sensitive file systems such as Linux. (#3)

Install on Windows

Download GalaxyQuest-Installer-windows-x86_64.exe, enable developer mode on your headset, connect it with a USB data cable and allow USB debugging. Open the installer, choose your own Super Mario Galaxy disc image or extracted folder, then click Install.

The APK, Python, DolphinTool and Android platform-tools are included. Movies are included by default. Allow about 16 GB free on the computer (10 GB for an extracted disc) and 7 GB on the headset.

Manual installation and updates

GalaxyQuest.apk and GalaxyQuest-converter.zip remain available for installation without the Windows installer, including on macOS and Linux. The README covers both methods.

To update, install the new APK over the old one using the README's manual app-install step. Saves and settings are kept. Game files converted for 0.1.8 don't need converting again.

You need your own Super Mario Galaxy disc. These downloads contain no Nintendo game data. Dolphin-2609-source.tar.gz is the matching source companion for the installer's DolphinTool; players don't need it. SHA256SUMS.txt provides checksums for the release downloads.
