MacFansControl v1.1.8
Fixes the helper update that 1.1.7 could not complete. On Macs that still run the older background helper installed under /Library/LaunchDaemons, Update Helper stopped with "Both helper installation methods are present. The existing helper was kept." macOS reports that older helper as enabled under the same name the modern registration would use, so the app wrongly concluded two helpers were installed. MacFansControl now asks launchd which file the running helper was loaded from and only holds when a second, app-registered helper really exists. The verified in-app app updater from 1.1.7 is unchanged: it checks the SHA-256 and the Developer ID signature before installing and no longer builds a privileged shell command from file names.
What's changed
- Update Helper works again when only the legacy helper is installed; the fan-safety preflight (Automatic preset, confirmed fan modes) still runs first.
- The hold remains for a genuine second helper registration, and the helper replacement is still a verified, rolled-back-on-failure swap.
Update or install
Existing users — update in app
- Open Settings > About, click Check Now, then Download & Install.
- When the download is ready, click Install Now. If
MacFansControl.appbelongs to your user it is replaced without a password; an app installed by another account (for example owned by root in Applications) asks for an administrator password once. - After the app relaunches, choose the Automatic fan preset, open Settings > General, and click Update Helper. Approve the administrator prompt; the helper is replaced and restarted. If the Mac still shows the hold afterwards, restart it and retry.
New install
Download MacFansControl-v1.1.8.zip, unzip it, and move MacFansControl.app to Applications.
Manual fallback
Use these steps only if the in-app updater cannot be reached or fails: quit MacFansControl, download MacFansControl-v1.1.8.zip, unzip it, and replace the existing app in Applications. Choose Automatic before quitting; do not force helper replacement when its safety check is held.
