MacFansControl v1.1.7

Security update, recommended for everyone. The in-app updater now verifies every update before installing it: the download must match the SHA-256 published with the release, the archive must contain exactly MacFansControl.app, and that app must carry BeyondTheCode's Developer ID signature and a newer version. The updater no longer removes the quarantine attribute and no longer runs a privileged shell command built from file names. An app that belongs to your user is replaced by a rename with no password, and the previous version is kept until the new one is verified in place. Updating from 1.1.6 still uses the old installer one last time, so it asks for an administrator password once.

What's changed

• In-app updater: verifies the SHA-256 and the Developer ID signature of every download before installing, keeps the quarantine attribute, never builds a privileged shell command from file names, and replaces an app owned by your user without a password.
• Release assets are named MacFansControl-v1.1.7.zip with a MacFansControl-v1.1.7.zip.sha256 sidecar, which the updater requires.

Update or install

Existing users — update in app

1. Choose the Automatic fan preset, then open Settings > About.
2. Click Check Now, then Download & Install.
3. When the download is ready, click Install Now. Updating from 1.1.6 still uses the previous installer one last time, so it asks for an administrator password once. From 1.1.7 on, MacFansControl.app is replaced without a password when it belongs to your user.
4. After the update, restart your Mac. If offered, use Settings > General > Update Helper; a held update keeps the existing helper and provides recovery guidance.

The release asset is now named MacFansControl-v<version>.zip (previously MacFansControl.zip); the updater in this version requires that name and its .sha256 sidecar.

New install

Download MacFansControl-v1.1.7.zip, unzip it, and move MacFansControl.app to Applications.

Manual fallback

Use these steps only if the in-app updater cannot be reached or fails: quit MacFansControl, download MacFansControl-v1.1.7.zip, unzip it, and replace the existing app in Applications. Choose Automatic before quitting; do not force helper replacement when its safety check is held.
