What's new in 0.12.0
For Windows, Linux and Android. The library is upgraded (schema 26) the first
time 0.12.0 starts; a safety copy is made first.
- A Library tab, with Videos folders. A third kind of library folder for
what is neither a film nor a show — home recordings, concerts, clips. Never
matched, so never in Needs attention; each video gets a tile with a frame
from the file (a plain picture on Android), resume, watched and Continue
Watching, and each sub-folder has Play all. - Folders, inside Kinema. Browse your drives, library folders and network
shares and play any video in them. On a desktop, type an address such as
\\server\share. "Add this folder to the library" asks what it holds and
scans at once. - Playlists. Add a film, a season or a folder of videos from its page, or
whatever is playing from the player's Audio & subtitles panel. Previous,
next and Up next follow the playlist..m3uimport and export on Windows
and Linux. - Trakt resume across devices. With Trakt connected, stop a film on one
device and continue it on another. The newer position always wins; one
switch in Settings → Accounts → Trakt turns it off. SIMKL stays one way. - Previous and next file for a video opened from the file manager: the
buttons,n/pand a remote's track keys step through its folder. - Open With on Linux: the
.deband.rpmlist Kinema for video files,
and the.tar.gzfolder can add itself to the app menu from Settings. - The stats panel (
i) lists the render passes mpv ran, with their times.
How it was checked: automated tests on Windows and Linux and keyboard flows
in WebKit and Edge for every new screen; the library upgrade from 0.11.0 on a
copy of a real library; in the real app with the real player, Videos folders
(frames, Play all, next) and a playlist playing its next item through Up next;
Trakt resume against a real account once (read, one pause, removed) and on the
Android TV emulator; and the installer from this release in a clean Windows Sandbox: install,
play, uninstall, nothing left behind.
Not tried yet: Folders on a real network share in the real app, .m3u import
and export through a real file dialog, and the new screens on a real Android
device.
The full list is in the changelog.
Windows
Installer: download kinema-0.12.0-windows-x64-setup.exe
and run it. It installs for your Windows account only (no
administrator) and adds Kinema to the Start menu. Uninstall it
from Settings → Apps: it removes the program, its shortcuts and its
"Open with" entries, and asks before deleting your library and
settings.
Portable: or download kinema-0.12.0-windows-x64.zip,
extract it anywhere, and run kinema.exe. Nothing is written
outside the folder and your app data.
Windows 11. Needs the WebView2 runtime, which ships with
Windows 11; on a PC without it the installer fetches it from
Microsoft, and the ZIP needs it installed first.
Windows will ask once whether to run it
Kinema is not code-signed, so the first time you open it Windows
shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then
Run anyway; Windows remembers. To check you got the file this
workflow built, run this in PowerShell where you downloaded it:
Get-FileHash .\kinema-0.12.0-windows-x64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256
Get-FileHash .\kinema-0.12.0-windows-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256Expected: ec6a438f3b4854f13010f0f4876f74783cc4651c7c12ff4feb2fcf04d61faabd for the installer,
82be48d870b3982fbf60123d70f1d1c5f1ebc4164819ce9baf98bd699780db99 for the ZIP.
Linux
Kinema uses your system's mpv and WebKitGTK; the packages install
them for you. For x86-64 PCs take the amd64 / x86_64 files,
for ARM the arm64 / aarch64 ones.
Ubuntu 24.04 or later, Debian 13:
sudo apt install ./kinema_0.12.0_amd64.debFedora:
sudo dnf install ./kinema-0.12.0-1.x86_64.rpmAnything else: unpack kinema-0.12.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
and run ./kinema; its README.txt names the two libraries to
install. HDR on Wayland needs mpv 0.40 or later — Ubuntu 26.04,
Debian 13, Fedora 43 and Arch have it. Each file has a .sha256
beside it to check the download with sha256sum -c.
Android (early version)
For Android TV boxes, installed by hand (sideloaded): download
kinema-0.12.0-android.apk, copy it to the device and
open it (Android asks once to allow installs from that source).
It is an early version, tried on one TV box and the emulator; a
phone has not been tried. See the README for what has been tested
and what is still missing. Check the download with
sha256sum -c kinema-0.12.0-android.apk.sha256; the
certificate it is signed with is named in the README.
First run
Kinema asks where it will be watched and where your movies and TV
folders are, then scans — with a few skippable setup pages while it
does. Posters and descriptions come from TMDB through a key Kinema
carries, so there is nothing to sign up for; a free key of your own
can be entered in Settings instead.
The Windows ZIP bundles an unmodified LGPL build of libmpv, which
you may replace; on Linux the system's libmpv is used; Android uses
Google's Media3 (Apache-2.0) — see NOTICE.md.
Something not working, or it works on a device the README does not
list? Say so: bug report
or device report.
