What's new in 0.11.0
For Windows and Linux. Android is unchanged apart from the shared fixes. The
library is upgraded (schema 23) the first time 0.11.0 starts; a safety copy is
made first.
- A Windows installer, beside the ZIP. It installs for your own account
(no administrator), and uninstalling removes everything of Kinema's — it
asks before deleting your library. - Kinema as your video player on Windows. Open a video with Kinema from
File Explorer, or drop it on the window, whether or not it is in your
library. Settings → Playback → Offer Kinema as a video player adds it to
Open with and Default apps. - Blu-ray disc folders and
.isoimages play — the main film, with its
chapters and track languages (no menus). Encrypted discs are not played,
and Kinema says so. Loose.m2tsfiles know their languages when the
disc'sBDMVfolder is beside them. - ffmpeg in one press on Windows, through winget, for the picture and
sound badges and intro detection from the audio. - Add without a match. In Needs attention, a home video or a fan edit
that no database lists can be kept under its own name. - The film pauses when its sound device goes away — a receiver switched
off, a headset unplugged — instead of playing on in silence. - Faster poster shelves on the desktop, a calmer Needs attention count, TV
mode the same size at any Windows scaling, two studio logos fixed, and the
player starting on a Windows without the Visual C++ runtime (this affected
the 0.10.0 ZIP too).
How it was checked: automated tests on Windows and Linux; the installer,
the video-player entries and playing a file tried end to end in a clean
Windows Sandbox; Blu-ray folders, .iso images and 4K .m2ts played on
Windows; pausing when the sound goes away tried with a real AV receiver.
Not tried yet: a real encrypted disc, and Add without a match in the real
app against a large library (it is covered by automated tests and the
keyboard and mouse flows).
The full list is in the changelog.
Windows
Installer: download kinema-0.11.0-windows-x64-setup.exe
and run it. It installs for your Windows account only (no
administrator) and adds Kinema to the Start menu. Uninstall it
from Settings → Apps: it removes the program, its shortcuts and its
"Open with" entries, and asks before deleting your library and
settings.
Portable: or download kinema-0.11.0-windows-x64.zip,
extract it anywhere, and run kinema.exe. Nothing is written
outside the folder and your app data.
Windows 11. Needs the WebView2 runtime, which ships with
Windows 11; on a PC without it the installer fetches it from
Microsoft, and the ZIP needs it installed first.
Windows will ask once whether to run it
Kinema is not code-signed, so the first time you open it Windows
shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then
Run anyway; Windows remembers. To check you got the file this
workflow built, run this in PowerShell where you downloaded it:
Get-FileHash .\kinema-0.11.0-windows-x64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256
Get-FileHash .\kinema-0.11.0-windows-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256Expected: f22035b9cebe338e6c190250da9da1409a7b12f8867b61175e7ad61f8e161d97 for the installer,
c8d76147ab7e7f0bd862c7db3dd4ad813f08ea38eff172c2d16376bd0b7c7668 for the ZIP.
Linux
Kinema uses your system's mpv and WebKitGTK; the packages install
them for you. For x86-64 PCs take the amd64 / x86_64 files,
for ARM the arm64 / aarch64 ones.
Ubuntu 24.04 or later, Debian 13:
sudo apt install ./kinema_0.11.0_amd64.debFedora:
sudo dnf install ./kinema-0.11.0-1.x86_64.rpmAnything else: unpack kinema-0.11.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
and run ./kinema; its README.txt names the two libraries to
install. HDR on Wayland needs mpv 0.40 or later — Ubuntu 26.04,
Debian 13, Fedora 43 and Arch have it. Each file has a .sha256
beside it to check the download with sha256sum -c.
Android (early version)
For Android TV boxes, installed by hand (sideloaded): download
kinema-0.11.0-android.apk, copy it to the device and
open it (Android asks once to allow installs from that source).
It is an early version, tried on one TV box and the emulator; a
phone has not been tried. See the README for what has been tested
and what is still missing. Check the download with
sha256sum -c kinema-0.11.0-android.apk.sha256; the
certificate it is signed with is named in the README.
First run
Kinema asks where it will be watched and where your movies and TV
folders are, then scans — with a few skippable setup pages while it
does. Posters and descriptions come from TMDB through a key Kinema
carries, so there is nothing to sign up for; a free key of your own
can be entered in Settings instead.
The Windows ZIP bundles an unmodified LGPL build of libmpv, which
you may replace; on Linux the system's libmpv is used; Android uses
Google's Media3 (Apache-2.0) — see NOTICE.md.
Something not working, or it works on a device the README does not
list? Say so: bug report
or device report.
