Release Note
- Fix: macOS builds are now ad-hoc signed during packaging, so a quarantined download is reported as blocked by Gatekeeper instead of the misleading "Caprine.app is damaged and can't be opened" (notably with Homebrew 7's quarantine-on-install); a real Developer ID signature still replaces the ad-hoc one once a certificate is configured
- Fix: RPM packages no longer ship
/usr/lib/.build-idfiles, which conflicted with other Electron packages such as Slack on install and forced arpm --force(issue #46); the build now fails loudly if those files ever come back - Fix: settings menu items are matched with an escaped SVG path prefix, so menu entries with special characters in their icon path resolve reliably
- Chore: dependency upgrades across the board (Electron 43.8.6, electron-builder 26, XO 5, stylelint 17, TypeScript 6, and more) —
npm auditnow reports 0 vulnerabilities, with the Electron 29 Intel pin untouched - Chore:
is-onlineis ESM-only in its current major, so it is loaded with a real dynamic import and the build now compiles withnode16module resolution
About auto-update
- Windows: in-app auto-update works from the previous release onward.
- Linux AppImage: in-app auto-update works from the previous release onward.
- macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon): in-app auto-update still requires an Apple Developer Program signature, which is not available yet — update by downloading new releases manually.
- Linux deb/rpm/pacman: no in-app auto-update; update via the package repositories (deb also on Gemfury).
- Existing installs from before 2.62.0 still look for updates in the old upstream location, so install a current release once to switch the updater to this fork.
Install via Homebrew (experimental)
There is now a tap for this fork (issue #27). It is early, so treat it as a test and report anything odd there:
brew tap bankjaneo/tap
brew trust --cask bankjaneo/tap/caprine # Homebrew 7+ only
brew install --cask bankjaneo/tap/caprine- Use the fully qualified cask name — plain
brew install --cask caprineresolves to homebrew-core's disabled upstream cask. - Apple Silicon and Intel are both covered (Intel keeps the Electron 29 runtime for older macOS).
- Update with
brew upgrade --cask bankjaneo/tap/caprine; the cask strips the quarantine attribute, so no "damaged" prompt. - In-app updates stay disabled for brew installs (
auto_updates false) — brew owns updating the app.
For macOS user
If macOS reports that "Caprine.app is damaged and can't be opened", that might be due to macOS gatekeeper flagged the download. Try running following commands in Terminal and open the app again.
xattr -l /Applications/Caprine.app
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Caprine.appEliminating this step and getting in-app auto-update working on macOS requires an Apple Developer Program membership ($99/year). If you'd like to help make that happen, you can support me here:
