What's new
- CPU+GPU budget tile on laptops (#96): the watt cap is the GPU's part of the laptop's power budget, and the new tile sets the CPU's share. Apply sets the budget to the cap plus that share. Type the watts on your power adapter's label in Adapter; the CPU's share goes from the laptop's stock share up to that rating less the cap.
- The tile appears beside Power cap once mVolt+ has read the budget: after a Power cap Apply, and at every start while it's on. It needs Power cap's switch and is off by default.
- Off, the next Power cap Apply returns the stock share. The tile's Reset applies the cap with the stock share; a reboot also returns the stock share, shown as Auto.
- The tile doesn't limit the CPU itself; the BIOS or a tool like ThrottleStop does. Profiles keep the share. Desktop cards never show the tile.
- Watt cap above the percentage: on GPUs where the watt cap is only an extra cap beside the percentage limit, a cap above the percentage now raises the percentage with it, up to its maximum, so the percentage no longer holds the GPU below your cap. A cap at or above the power that maximum gives, such as one another tool left, limits nothing: it shows no pending change and Apply leaves it. Laptops keep the two requests separate.
Fixes
- Startup on laptops (#97): when Dynamic Boost has set the GPU power request itself, at or below the GPU maximum the cap raised, the tuning page no longer shows 1 change · Review… for it.
- Logon delay on laptops (#91, #97): laptops with Dynamic Boost now start mVolt+ 20 s after sign-in by default, since some laptop control apps overwrite an earlier apply. When v0.50.13 first starts, a laptop's delay of 10 s, the old default, moves to 20 s; any other delay stays, and you can set 10 s again in Settings → General. Desktops keep 10 s.
- Damaged power-cap file (#91): a power-cap recovery file damaged before the last restart no longer blocks Power and Power cap changes, their Reset, profiles with them and the startup profile. If it stopped your startup profile, apply that profile once by hand after updating.
- V/F curves with a large core offset (#99): a profile whose lowest V/F points stay at stock under a large core clock offset no longer fails after a restart with "The profile contains an invalid V/F point offset".
- Opening mVolt+ at logon: with Apply startup profile, then exit, opening mVolt+ while the startup profile still applies now starts it once that's done, instead of waiting a minute and closing without a window.
- XOC voltage range: a profile saved while the range was on by itself no longer makes it your setting when applied or loaded; it stays automatic while the limits need it.
Known limitations
- The laptop changes were built from the reports in #91, #96 and #97 and are not yet tested on a laptop here. Please report how they work for you.
- Where the watt cap is only an extra cap, a profile saved with the cap above what the percentage can reach now raises the percentage to its maximum. Lower the cap and save the profile again to keep a lower limit.
- Once a profile keeps a laptop CPU share, v0.50.12 and older can't open that GPU's profiles and leave the file untouched. Before going back, save that profile again with the CPU+GPU budget tile off, or delete it.
