Welcome to the 2nd community hotfix of the final build of Geckium Public Beta 1, brought to you by several people. This will hopefully be the final build of the pre-mpl2 era, so I added a little more to make it a sweet send-off.
Making these recent releases has been more annoying than anything else - the old codebase was all well and good when it was new, but with bruni gone, many decisions made during the development of this original codebase coming to since bite me back REAL HARD, and the mess that has in retrospect been tacking on compatibility adjustments for newer releases of the Mozilla made browser, it's become an unfun hackfest to update and would likely be a pain in the rear to clean up come the death of 115 ESR in March. This codebase needs to go.
Starting now, unless absolutely necessary due to notable breakages in later releases, the pre-mpl2 codebase is now dead - no more work will be poured into it otherwise, and instead work will begin fully on Beta 2 which will take that codebase, give it heavy restructuring, remove all code for 116 - 152 as 140 ESR will not be around to see Beta 2 release, move 115 code to the bottom in a new 'remove when 115 eols' section for future me's sanity and repeat that behaviour onwards as the upstream progresses and changes, remove various pieces and add new pieces around the place to make Geckium the best it has ever been.
Watch this space. It will be worth it.
A few notes
- 140 ESR will reach end of life with the release of 158, which happens to be the upcoming release. If you're still using 140, update to 153, or let the browser update to 153 by itself. Beta 2 will never support 140 due to this.
- This update does not address #593 - this is a problem that has been present since Geckium's debut, originally as a race condition so rare I could only reproduce it once by sheer luck by the time @angelbruni was already long gone from active participation. Given the rarity, I decided to put it on the backburner to think about in Beta 2.0 or 2.1 instead - as you know, however, that rare bug was promoted by upstream to being 100% likely, and it is unfortunately a really deep problem with the way pre-mpl2 Geckium was designed, meaning to resolve it I'd need to take the code apart and, just... I'm going to anyways with Beta 2... capiche? Sorry for the inconvenience. Seriously.
Updating Geckium?
To update Geckium, simply delete your Firefox Profile's chrome folder (use about:support to find your Firefox Profile per the instructions on Geckium's README), and then copy the below Public Beta 1.0 ZIP file's Profile Folder -> chrome folder in its place, before finally closing and opening Firefox. Geckium will handle the rest automatically.

Geckium is in an Early Beta stage
Non-English-speaking Geckium users may find parts of Geckium's user interface are written in [!!! ƥƨèúδôℓôçáℓè !!!] - this means there hasn't yet been a translation for that string in your language - if you see any, please fork the repository, translate the dtd/properties files in locale accordingly, then send a Pull Request to this repository containing the localised strings!
Aside from having incomplete localisation for non-English Geckium users, please remember that due to Geckium being in an Early Beta state, there are many things missing from Geckium currently, including:
- Material Design 1 (or 58, is incomplete and seriously buggy)
- Floating Bookmarks Bar has a buggy background that is either incorrect or is misaligned with the new tab background
- Misc. Downloads Shelf behaviour such as dragging a download
- Error Pages, such as phishing
- Styling for the Downloads page
- Geckium and Firefox Updates from the About dialog/page (Geckium's current update checker is a placeholder until a better, automated, update experience is implemented in the future)
- Preventing the Downloads popup from appearing when downloading a file
These are all planned to be added in future Beta releases.
Please report bugs in the Issues tab of this repository.
