Flowe 0.6.4

If your X3 screen froze after flashing, this release is for you.

On the device

Newer X3 screens work. Some X3 units ship a different screen
controller. Flowe booted on them, but the screen kept whatever the last
firmware drew and every button felt dead, which looked exactly like a
failed flash. Flowe now recognises the controller and drives it. Thanks to
Maciej Anielski, who found this, diagnosed it and wrote the fix.

Your book's real chapters. The chapter menu listed the parts of the
EPUB file instead of the book's chapters. Those parts begin with the
cover, the title page and the copyright, so chapter one sat at row four or
six and nothing lined up. The menu now shows the book's own chapters, with
the names the author gave them.

The chapter menu opens at once. Deep inside a long book it could take
ten seconds or more, and got slower with every press. On a 287-chapter
book at chapter 91, measured: 6.5 seconds before, 18 milliseconds now.

Hold to move faster. Holding up or down in the chapter list jumps five
chapters at a time and redraws each jump, so you can see where you are. It
previously did nothing at all.

Cover art appears more often. Books hide their cover in more ways than
Flowe knew how to look. It now finds the ones it used to miss.

Up and down. List screens label the front buttons up and down, because
that is what they do. The launcher and the bookshelf still say left and
right, because there they still move sideways.

A smaller focus mark. The FOCUS badge covered a fifth of the cover. It
is now a small mark in the corner.

If something goes wrong

The flash page has a new "Flashed, but the screen is stuck?" panel. It
reads your device and writes nothing, then restarts it and records what it
says while starting. Copy that and send it to us — it usually contains the
whole answer.

Install

  • Browser (easiest): open https://www.flowe.ink/flash in Chrome or
Edge, plug in USB-C, and press Update Flowe. Keeps your pairing and your
    books.
  • microSD card: download flowe-firmware.zip, copy update.bin to the
root of the card, reinsert it, then hold the left side button and power
    until the update screen appears.

One file works on both the Xteink X3 and X4 — the firmware detects your
device.

Apps

flowe-0.6.4-android.apk is attached; on iPhone, use TestFlight.

Books already on your card keep the chapter list they were built with.
The apps rebuild them once on the next sync, which is also what restores
any missing cover art. Nothing to do but sync.
