github agosez/CrossInk-Bookorbit v2.0.0+bookorbit.1-rc1

pre-release41 minutes ago

Summary

First release candidate of this fork on CrossInk v2.0.0-RC, for testing ahead of v2.0.0+bookorbit.1. It also includes everything in v1.6.1+bookorbit.7.

From CrossInk, this brings among others BOOX Picco support, SD card plugins, menu languages and hyphenation packs installed from the SD card or downloaded over Wi-Fi, a Daily Reading Time stat, per-edge screen calibration, Character Spacing, more status bar options (text size and battery display per bar), Select Chapter as a shortcut, finished books marked in the File Browser and Library, selection handles with a Look Up / Clip toolbar on touch devices, a Legacy menu navigation option on devices with buttons, an About screen with an exportable support file, and faster indexing and opening of large EPUBs. On devices with PSRAM, EPUBs can also use their embedded fonts and static .otf fonts load from the SD card. See the CrossInk v2.0.0-RC notes for the full list.

Important

English is now the only built-in menu language. After the update, the reader shows English until your language is installed again: What's New offers to download it, or use Settings → System → Device → Download Languages. This fork publishes its own language packs; CrossInk's packs cannot be used here, as they lack this fork's screens. To install without Wi-Fi, copy the .crossink/languages folder from crossink-languages-2.0.0-bookorbit.1-rc1.zip to the root of the SD card.

Hyphenation other than English also moved to packs. For books in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish or Ukrainian, install the pack from Settings → Reader → Page Layout → Hyphenation Packs. A book that needs a missing pack offers to open that screen once per reading session.

Sync Server stays out of this fork. CrossInk v2.0.0 renames KOReader Sync to Sync Server and extends it to reading stats and clippings, with new Sync Book, Sync Folder and Sync Books actions. None of these are in this fork, which syncs with BookOrbit.

Installing

This is a release candidate. On a device already running this fork (v1.6.1+bookorbit.5 or newer), turn on Settings → System → Include Release Candidates, then Check for Updates installs it over the air. A device on an older version of the fork can update to v1.6.1+bookorbit.7 first.

A device running CrossInk has to be flashed once by USB or from the SD card: see the installation guide, which also covers USB-locked devices and reverting to upstream. The BOOX Picco installs over USB only, for every update: see BOOX Picco. Pick the file for your device:

Device File
Xteink X3 / X4 firmware-x3-x4-v2.0.0-bookorbit.1-rc1.bin
Xteink X4 Pro firmware-x4-pro-v2.0.0-bookorbit.1-rc1.bin
Xteink X4 Classic firmware-x4-classic-v2.0.0-bookorbit.1-rc1.bin
Seeed reTerminal Sticky firmware-sticky-v2.0.0-bookorbit.1-rc1.bin
BOOX Picco firmware-picco-v2.0.0-bookorbit.1-rc1.bin

Caution

On a USB-locked device, flash only the file for your model: another model's file can damage the reader for good.

Warning

I do not own a BOOX Picco, an X4 Pro or an X4 Classic. The Picco and X4 Classic builds are untested.

Turning Include Release Candidates back off keeps this candidate installed until a newer stable release comes out, since the updater never installs an older version. To go back to v1.6.1+bookorbit.7 now, flash it by USB or from the SD card.

What's Changed since v1.6.1+bookorbit.7

New device

  • Releases now include a firmware for the BOOX Picco. It installs over USB into the reader's application slot and leaves the factory recovery software untouched. As on CrossInk, the Picco has no Wi-Fi or SD card firmware update.

Languages

  • This fork hosts its own language and hyphenation packs, which Download Languages and Hyphenation Packs fetch over Wi-Fi. Each release also carries crossink-languages-<version>.zip for installing them from the SD card.
  • The BookOrbit screens, sync messages and Home theme are translated into all 27 languages besides English, not only the 8 this fork covered before.

BookOrbit

  • The OPDS browser moves from Home to File Transfer, as in CrossInk v2.0.0, to make room for Plugins. The BookOrbit catalog stays on Home; on the Cover Grid home screen its tab now sits next to Plugins.
  • A book download from the BookOrbit catalog reserves memory for the largest piece of secure data once the request is sent, while memory is still in one piece, the way CrossInk v2.0.0 does for OPDS books. A server that agrees to small pieces, as most nginx and Apache setups do, no longer costs that reservation at all (#96).
  • BookOrbit Sync no longer sends a guessed position when the device cannot place the page within the book's structure: the sync stops with an error instead. A guessed position could send another reader to the wrong place, or to the start of the book.
  • Shortcuts set to BookOrbit Sync keep working. CrossInk v2.0.0 gives the numbers they were saved under to Back Home and Home/Reader, so they are carried over the first time the device starts, on every button that offers BookOrbit Sync, the Home key and Quick Actions included.

Not included

  • Sync Server (formerly KOReader Sync) and its Sync Book, Sync Folder and Sync Books actions, as explained above. A KOReader account saved before this fork removed KOReader Sync is kept.
