MegaDownloader Revival v2.6.2 — Safer downloads, responsive startup & Russian support

Download — MegaDownloader.exe (single file, all 15 DLLs embedded) or MegaDownloader-Revival-win-x86.zip (portable archive).

Upgrading — close the application, then replace the executable for the single-file edition, or replace the application files with the new ZIP contents. Settings and the download queue remain in %LOCALAPPDATA%\MegaDownloader\. Existing manual language choices and download data are preserved.

Requirements — Windows 7 SP1 or later · .NET Framework 4.8 (built into Windows 10 1903+).

Safer file deletion and download retries, automatic recovery after file locks, a responsive window while the queue loads, and built-in Russian. This release brings together the download safety, persistence and performance fixes since 2.6.1, with 11 interface languages and documentation in English, Simplified Chinese and Russian.

What changes for you

• The window stays responsive while restoring your queue. Queue loading and file-lock retries run in the background. Saving, scheduling and new imports wait for the recovered state; closing cancels pending loading safely.
• Temporary file locks recover automatically. Settings, queues and the streaming library keep write protection until their data is ready. Recovery preserves edits made while waiting and applies your saved language, startup preferences and streaming port.
• Deleting a task protects unrelated files. Existing files with the same name are checked for ownership before deletion. Declining the unverified-output confirmation cancels the entire remove-and-delete operation.
• Resume and retry are more reliable. Expired direct URLs are refreshed without discarding valid resume data, preallocated files need only their additional disk space, and per-task resume restores throttling.
• Verification and saving do less repeated work. Batched MetaMAC verification, reusable encrypted queue fields, shorter save locks and merged list refreshes reduce overhead. Settings performs fewer layout passes.
• Russian is built in. Automatic system-language matching now supports Russian; all 11 language packs include the recovery messages. Fractional speed limits save and display correctly across regional formats.

Symptoms fixed in this release

• A locked settings file looked like a first run or disk failure → explicit recovery status and automatic retries preserve the on-disk data.
• Opening a large queue blocked the window, and the first save repeated expensive encryption → background restoration, bounded parallel recovery and valid ciphertext reuse reduce waiting.
• Removing a task could delete an unrelated same-name file → delivered-output ownership is tracked and older tasks are verified first.
• Resuming a preallocated file failed a full-size free-space check, or retrying reused an expired URL → only extra allocation is required and the direct URL is refreshed.
• Stop/restart raced an old HTTP request or cancellation callback, or 7z could not stop while reading output → restart waits for active work, and subprocess output is drained while cancellation remains active.
• A large or concurrently changing queue could stop saving, and media-library recovery could overwrite recent edits → overflow-safe signatures, short snapshots, per-save retries and atomic recovery merges preserve changes.

Details

Downloading, deletion and extraction

• Persist actual delivered-output ownership. Legacy queues use task metadata and MetaMAC verification; files whose ownership cannot be established are retained. Links without a MetaMAC require explicit confirmation before deleting their output.
• Move legacy output verification off the UI thread and outside the global deletion lock; reuse verified results.
• Distinguish resume-preserving retries from full resets when refreshing expired URLs. Ignore stale callbacks from replaced downloaders, notify cancellation once per cycle, and wait for requests and cancellation callbacks before restarting.
• Restore a task's throttled streams and force-download state under global pause. Validate speed limits before conversion and contain invalid completion-path errors.
• Persist password-only changes and cleared extraction passwords. Drain both 7z output streams while honoring cancellation, and enumerate archive entries once.

Recovery and persistence

• Distinguish missing, corrupt and temporarily locked XML. A locked primary file never silently falls back to an older backup; valid backups remain available for corrupt primaries, and locked backups are retried after release.
• Protect settings, queue and library files from writes during transient recovery. Merge additions and deletions made in memory, retain unique library IDs, and serialize library saves.
• Defer business workers and downloads until saved settings are available. Apply recovered startup preferences, language and service ports; silent startup keeps its recovery path active.
• Keep Settings inputs available while the configuration is locked, with a prompt to save again after recovery.
• Serialize queue snapshots outside the global list lock, snapshot file references during concurrent imports, coalesce import saves without losing a final request, and schedule a corrective save after structural changes.
• Prevent the large-queue signature overflow from stopping the save worker, retry individual save failures, and invalidate the settings fingerprint when ELC accounts change.

Startup and performance

• Paint the prepared window before background queue restoration. Keep saving and scheduling gated until publication; defer incoming arguments, preserve tasks already added in memory, and retain write protection on load failure.
• Construct secure strings in bulk with the framework API and clear temporary plaintext byte buffers. Reuse only successfully decrypted current-entropy ciphertext; migrate historical entropy on save and invalidate caches after field or visibility changes. The on-disk format remains compatible.
• Restore packages of at least 128 items with up to four workers, bounded by logical processor count, using independent buffers and XML nodes while preserving task order. Cancel loading and file-lock waits on close.
• Keep at most one pending periodic UI refresh; skip that painting while hidden or minimized. Structural updates remain immediate, and the original 430 ms business/scheduling cadence is retained.
• Batch MetaMAC reads with a reusable buffer and AES block loop. Chunk boundaries, byte order, zero padding and integrity decisions remain equivalent; independent chunk vectors and first/last-byte corruption checks pass.
• Reduce repeated throttle lookups, reflection, translation lookup, built-in language synchronization and Settings layout work, while retaining layout for long translations and high DPI.

In the same isolated 679-task queue benchmark, alternating five runs per build, median queue recovery and UI preparation fell from 3.69 s to 1.33 s (about 64% less); file-model restoration fell from 2.74 s to 0.47 s. First encrypted queue serialization fell from 2,046.56 ms to 7.24 ms, excluding disk writes. Language and interface

• Add the complete Russian built-in pack and system-language matching, bringing the total to 11 UI languages. The Simplified and Traditional Chinese UI packs remain available.
• Format fractional speed limits for the current locale and validate parsing consistently in Settings and task properties, rejecting grouping separators, nonfinite values and overflow.
• Maintain documentation in English, Simplified Chinese and Russian; retire the outdated Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean README translations. Refresh native screenshots with the current release build and demonstration data.

Documentation and verification

• Debug and Release builds and their complete regression suites passed 924 assertions each, including 157 startup-specific assertions. Coverage includes all historical DPAPI entropy values, current ciphertext reuse, cache invalidation, ordered parallel restore, cancellable file locks, responsive UI loading and close/failure protection.
• Download, resume, ownership, extraction cancellation, recovery, streaming restart and five regional speed-limit formats are checked with temporary files, loopback HTTP services and isolated native controls. Tests do not load real accounts or user download queues.
• Version metadata, three READMEs, the changelog, contributor guides, issue template and screenshots are synchronized. Display/update version: 2.6.2; assembly/file/project/update-feed version: 2.6.2.0.
• Asset names are unchanged. The ZIP contains exactly 17 files: the executable, 15 dependency DLLs and runtime configuration. All 15 DLLs are also embedded in the standalone EXE; the EXE inside the ZIP matches the standalone asset. Logs, PDBs, user data, test output and local tooling are excluded.
• Builds retain the existing BC42305 XML-comment warning. Real MEGA transfers, full process cold-start measurements and multi-monitor/high-DPI behavior on other devices are outside this isolated verification.
