Changes
Ultrawide displays
Mostly from knuckleslee (#112, #113, #114). Thank you!
- Races fill a wider display: 21:9, 32:9 and beyond.
- The 3D view gets wider (hor+).
- The HUD's left and right groups move to the screen edges. Graphics > UI Alignment Mode > Center keeps them in the middle instead.
- Menus stay centred over a backdrop that fills the whole width.
- Movies keep 16:9 with black bars.
- Two-player screens keep the original 16:9 picture, with black at the sides: the split race, a Tag Race while the two hold hands, and their On your Gear screen. A wide two-player view is planned for a later version.
- Graphics > Aspect Ratio:
- Auto is the default on Windows and Linux.
- 16:9 keeps the original picture everywhere. Android uses 16:9 by default, because a wider picture costs a phone frame rate.
Launcher graphics settings (#112)
- Display Mode: Borderless (the default) or Windowed.
- Window size:
- The list holds the sizes your display reports and the common sizes.
- Custom takes any width and height.
- New windows start at the desktop size.
- Render Size:
- Original is the default and draws the game's own 720 lines, exactly as before.
- The other steps run from 0.25x to 3.0x of the window or display.
- An older Render Size setting is converted to the nearest step.
Controls like the No Kinect Patch (#109)
- Tag Race: both players holding LT now hold hands.
- Relay Race: BACK swaps in the next racer, as A already does.
- Yes/no dialogs: X confirms, as A does.
Kinect v2 (#97)
- A normal jump with both feet now jumps. Before, it took a shift from foot to foot.
- The display no longer turns off while you play on a Kinect or webcam.
Validation
- Unit tests: CTest passed on Windows (151) and Linux (143). GitHub Actions builds passed on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
- Scripted races at 2560x1080 (21:9) and 2560x720 (32:9):
- A one-player Free Race through the finish and the results.
- A two-controller Tag Race: split screen, holding hands, On your Gear and the pause menu.
- Windows package:
- Race checks on D3D12, Vulkan, and D3D12 in a 21:9 window.
- Every pipeline was prepared, no shader was left untranslated, and the save was left unchanged.
- Linux package: Vulkan start-up smoke test in WSL, with all 455 pipelines prepared.
- Android: this release's Android 10+ APK on an AYN Thor prepared all 455 Vulkan pipelines and ran a race without errors at 59.9 fps (0.7.3: 59.4). The APKs keep the existing signing certificate.
- Shaders: the shader ABI moved to 12.
shaders.packwas rebuilt: 476 shaders, each with DXIL and SPIR-V. - Not tested:
- a real ultrawide monitor (only windows of that shape);
- online play on an ultrawide display;
- the Kinect v2 jump on real hardware (reports are welcome).
Downloads

FreeRidersRecompiled. - Android 10 or later: prefer
android10-arm64.apk. - Android 9: use
android-arm64.apk. - Android version code: 41. The companion licence archive applies to both APKs.
- Checksums:
SHA256SUMS.txt.
Use your own game disc image. No game data, private saves or test overrides are included.
Known limitations
- Two-player screens: stay 16:9 on a wider display.
- Android: the notification bar can cover the top of the picture on some phones (#118).
- Physical Kinect input and window title statistics: Windows only.
- Online play: everyone should use the same version.
- Being investigated:
- Relay Race: 2P vs 2P is not supported yet.
- From v0.5.0:
- lighting has not been compared with the Xbox 360;
- no camera motion inference on Linux or Android;
- performance varies by device.
