v0.4.7 Preview - Windows CPU optimizations and rendering stability

Changes

  • Reduce Windows guest checkpoint overhead by using the validated interval of 256. Other platforms retain 32. Overrides are validated and logged.
  • Record D3D12 draw commands on a bounded render worker, reducing work on the guest thread. Vulkan keeps synchronous recording by default. SFR_RENDER_THREAD=0 disables the worker for comparison.
  • Fix stale resolved textures when guest physical allocations are reused during scene changes. Keep resources alive until their submitted GPU work finishes, including when render recording fails.
  • Add reproducible desktop benchmark tooling with isolated saves/caches, source hashes and paired comparisons. Ordinary game time, audio and complete rendering remain enabled by default.
  • Add rendering regression coverage, including depth/stencil preservation around color-only draws, queue ordering, resource lifetime and failure cleanup.

Thanks to @knuckleslee for the benchmark, checkpoint and render-thread contributions in #33, integrated through #34, #35 and #36. This release also includes the remaining investigation evidence and regression coverage in #37.

Performance and validation

On the tested i9-14900KF/RTX 4090 stationary workload, the checkpoint adjustment improved D3D12 throughput by roughly 3–6% and Vulkan by roughly 3–4%. A separate D3D12 render-worker comparison improved roughly 1.1–1.4%. These are separate experiments, not additive guarantees; P95 results for the render worker were mixed.

Windows, Linux, macOS build checks and Android launcher/camera CI passed. Local Vulkan/D3D12 rendering and scheduling regressions passed. Release packages include matching shader ABI 10 assets and pipeline manifests, and Android packages preserve the existing signing certificate with 16 KB-compatible native libraries.

Packaged Windows binaries completed bounded normal-time race checks on D3D12 (Frozen Forest) and Vulkan (Dolphin Resort), with source saves preserved. The Linux archive passed a Vulkan startup smoke in WSL. The new Android APKs passed packaging checks; they have not replaced the ongoing Thor manual-test installation.

Downloads

  • Windows x64: download and extract the Windows ZIP; run FreeRidersRecompiled.exe.
  • Linux x64: download and extract the Linux archive; run FreeRidersRecompiled.
  • Android 10 or later: prefer android10-arm64.apk for native thread-local storage.
  • Android 9: use android-arm64.apk.
  • Android version code is 17. The companion license archive applies to both APKs. SHA256SUMS.txt provides checksums.

Use your own game disc image. No game data, private saves or test overrides are included.

Known limitations

  • This release does not establish an Android performance improvement. Intro playback and lower-end performance still vary by device.
  • The specific crash reported in #31 has not been reproduced or confirmed fixed; reporter logs are still needed.
  • Full Grand Prix progression and every course/device combination have not been verified. Recorded mission and course checks are documented with their limits in the repository.
