v0.10.48 — Frame skipping starts again on slow tablets

Changes

  • Frame skipping starts working again on slow tablets (#1). On a Galaxy Tab A9 (Mali-G57), one race ran at about 0.4 speed: the tablet could not draw every frame, but frame skipping (Launcher › Graphics › Frame skipping, Auto) stayed off for the whole race. Frame skipping keeps an estimate of how long a frame takes when it is not drawn. The first such frame of a race is slow (the race is still loading things), so the estimate started too high, and the once-a-second retry rarely landed on a frame that could correct it. Now the retry is the first late frame a second after the last skip, and if that frame is quick the estimate starts again from it. A device that is too slow even without drawing still draws every frame, as before.

Everything else is the same as v0.10.47.

Validation

  • The fix: a unit test replays the tablet's case (drawn frames 36 ms, undrawn 8 ms, a slow first undrawn frame): before, the race ran at about 0.46 speed; now it is at full speed after the first second. On a PC with slow drawn frames forced, a race skips the same frames as before (speed 0.958 before and after). The Galaxy Tab A9 the problem was reported on is not one we have.
  • Windows x64 package, Vulkan, with the validation layer: a whole Dolphin Resort race with no validation errors (speed 1.000, all 455 pipelines prepared). The title movie, Sharp scaling and an Avatar award in the middle of a race were also checked.
  • macOS (M1) package: a whole Dolphin Resort race at full speed (1.000), no MoltenVK errors.
  • AYN Thor, this release's APK (Android 10+):
    • Dolphin Resort at full speed (60 fps, 0.999), still racing on the 2nd lap.
    • Touch controls and Tilt to lean on: 0.998.
    • Camera motion on (the Thor has no camera): 0.999.
    • Threads on one core: 0.996.
  • Linux archive: built on Ubuntu 22.04 (needs glibc 2.35), with the camera runtime next to the game.
  • Android APKs: same signing key as before, so they install over 0.10.47.
  • Unit tests:
    • 179 passed on Linux, 187 on Windows.
    • On macOS, 176 of 178 passed; the 2 that failed are the same tests that earlier releases failed, and the macOS GitHub Actions run leaves them out.
    • GitHub Actions builds and tests passed on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
  • Not tested:
    • Phones other than the AYN Thor.
    • The iOS app was built and packaged only.
