v0.10.47 — Races draw their scenery on older Snapdragon phones

latest release: v0.10.48

Changes

  • Races draw their scenery on older Snapdragon phones (#344). On a Galaxy S20 FE (Adreno 650), races showed only the ground, fences and shadows: the canyon walls, buildings and racers were drawn, but the sky drawn after them covered them. The game keeps depth (how far away each pixel is) within a range; this phone's graphics driver got that range backwards for the way the races draw, so everything looked as near as the sky. On Qualcomm (Snapdragon / Adreno) GPUs the game now cuts off what is outside that range instead, which every driver handles the same way. Other GPUs are unchanged. If it ever looks wrong, Test options › Graphics › Clip depth turns it on or off.

Everything else is the same as v0.10.46.

Validation

  • The fix: on a PC (Vulkan), Rocky Ridge draws the whole scene with Clip depth on and off. On the AYN Thor (Adreno 740) Clip depth is on by default (NATIVE_DEPTH_CLIP enabled=1) and races draw everything. The Adreno 650 the bug was reported on is not one we have: the reporter's draw-by-draw capture from 0.10.46 showed the cause.
  • Windows x64 package, Vulkan, with the validation layer: a whole Dolphin Resort race with no validation errors (speed 1.000, all 455 pipelines prepared). The title movie, Sharp scaling and an Avatar award in the middle of a race were also checked.
  • macOS (M1) package: a whole Dolphin Resort race at full speed (1.000), no MoltenVK errors.
  • AYN Thor, this release's APK (Android 10+):
    • Dolphin Resort at full speed (60 fps, 0.999), still racing on the 2nd lap.
    • Touch controls and Tilt to lean on: 0.998.
    • Camera motion on (the Thor has no camera): 0.999.
    • Threads on one core: 0.996.
  • Linux archive: built on Ubuntu 22.04 (needs glibc 2.35), with the camera runtime next to the game.
  • Android APKs: same signing key as before, so they install over 0.10.46.
  • Unit tests:
    • 179 passed on Linux, 187 on Windows (one timed out once under the full parallel run and passed on its own).
    • On macOS, 176 of 178 passed; the 2 that failed are the same tests that earlier releases failed, and the macOS GitHub Actions run leaves them out.
    • GitHub Actions builds and tests passed on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
  • Not tested:
    • Phones other than the AYN Thor.
    • The iOS app was built and packaged only.
