Changes
- Tilt to kick (#247). The phone switch from v0.10.24 is now Launcher › Controls › Touch › Tilt to kick (off by default). A quick tip of the phone's top edge away from you is a kick dash (X).
- Holding it tipped kicks once. Bring the phone back towards how you held it at the start of the race to kick again.
- Tipping back does nothing, and the tilt no longer touches the stick, so it can't start a trick.
- If you turned on Tilt to lean, the same switch is now Tilt to kick.
- Races keep up better on slow or hot phones (#176).
- The main thread helps with the race's jobs. Each race frame the game hands about 30 jobs to three helper threads and used to wait for the slowest. The main thread now takes jobs from the queue itself before it waits, so a helper on a slow or throttled core holds the frame up less. Test options › Processor › Main thread runs race jobs turns it off.
- Frames that aren't drawn skip the course's object drawing. The course still works out which areas the cameras are in, because its logic needs that. Racers and items still draw every frame, because the race reads what they draw. Test options › Gameplay › Skipped frames: stage areas only turns it off.
- Text fix: the launcher, README and release notes no longer claim the tilt speeds up or brakes.
Everything else is the same as v0.10.24.
Validation
- AYN Thor, this release's APK:
- Normal race: Dolphin Resort at full speed (0.999, 60 fps). A frame the game skips drawing now takes about 5.1 ms, against 7.4 ms in v0.10.24.
- Helper threads held to the little cores, like a phone that puts them on its slow cores: race speed 0.84 of real time, against 0.61 before these changes.
- Tilt to kick on: the sensor opens and the race runs at full speed. The tilting itself wasn't tried; no one can tip the device remotely.
- Windows x64 package, Vulkan, with the validation layer: a whole race, no validation errors, all 455 pipelines. Before release, four more Windows races exercised the job change and four courses (Dolphin Resort, Metropolis Speedway, Frozen Forest, Magma Rift) exercised the drawing change. Dolphin's big jump was cleared and no racer fell out of Metropolis.
- macOS (M1) package: a whole Dolphin Resort race at full speed. Undrawn frames 4.7 ms, against about 5.2 ms before.
- Unit tests: 178 passed on Windows (one needs the Kinect SDK), 170 on Linux. GitHub Actions builds and tests passed on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
