v0.10.16 — Samsung Exynos phones (Xclipse)

Changes

  • Samsung Exynos phones with an Xclipse GPU (#224). On a Galaxy A55 (Exynos 1480, Xclipse 530), the game stayed on "Preparing pipelines 0 of 455" until Android closed it.
    • Cause: Samsung's shader compiler spent minutes and hundreds of MB on the game's first shader, then failed. The shaders' main loop is a construct that compiler handles badly.
    • Fix: on Xclipse GPUs, the game now rewrites that loop when it loads the shaders, as it already does on Macs and iPhones. Other GPUs are unchanged.
    • To turn it off: Settings › Test options › Rewrite shader dispatch loops › Off.
  • Easier to diagnose pipeline preparation:
    • game.log now reports any pipeline that takes more than 5 seconds to prepare, with progress every 10 seconds.
    • The final line names the slowest pipeline.
    • On Android the same lines also appear in the system log.

Everything else is the same as v0.10.15.

Validation

  • Galaxy A55 (Xclipse 530, Android 16), on Firebase Test Lab:
    • Before the fix: stuck on the first pipeline. The driver's compiler ran for 209 s, used over 550 MB, then failed, matching the report.
    • With the fix: all 455 pipelines prepared in 14–18 s, and every pipeline drew without a hang.
    • Not tested: a full race on an Xclipse phone, and other Xclipse GPUs (Galaxy S24 Exynos, A56).
  • Other phones on Test Lab, with the fix: Pixel 10a (Mali-G715) and an Adreno 750 phone prepared and drew all 455 pipelines as before.
  • Windows x64 package, Vulkan, with the validation layer: a whole race, no validation errors, all 455 pipelines; the shader loops are left as they were on this GPU.
  • AYN Thor, this release's APK: Dolphin Resort at full speed (0.999, 60 fps), all 455 pipelines prepared; the shader loops are left as they were on this GPU.
  • Unit tests: 159 passed on Linux. GitHub Actions builds and tests passed on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
